I have an old saddle I don't use (no horse) but I'm having problems with mould/mildew growing on it. I've been cleaning it every few months using Belvoir tack cleaner, which supposedly has an anti-fungal formula, but the panels etc. are spotted with white again within a few weeks. It is kept in a warm and dry room in my house.

A (non horsey) friend suggested adding some Milton to the water when cleaning, but I'm worried that might damage the leather.

Has anyone got any good tips to get rid of this mould?

I have that problem with some tack and found that wrapping (difficult with a saddle I know) newspaper round it and then putting it in an old pillow case really works.

Milton will get rid of it in the short term - although it will do the leather no favours! But once clean try covering it with neatsfoot oil. A good coating will stop the air getting to the spores and hopefully stop them growing.

Thanks, I will try the neatsfoot oil first I think

Neatsfoot oil has always really helped my tack!

Keeping a cover on it too helps - i've got homemade bridlebags and saddle cloths for mine and it does help, although have noticed if it has fleece it prevents it better than if it is just cotton!

Agree re the kochaline, a bit messy but really does condition the leatherwork and helps prevent mould and mildew.

MerryRowy I love your signature - what a handsome horse.
