preventing thrush.

one of ours had thrush in the spring,think he stood resting and poo-ed in the same place in the stable.

i treated it and it cleared up quickly.

my farrier says he has deep frogs/clefts and maybe prone to it in the future.

the pony will be living out for the winter on a dryish sloping field so i wonder if there is any thing i can do to help prevent thrush in the future?

any products that i can apply etc.??

Keep his feet picked out daily (as I'm sure you do). Maybe give his soles and frogs a slosh over with either baby bottle sterilising fluid (a cheapy one from Wilko etc) or hydrogen peroxide and brush in with a hoof brush or an old toothbrush. I found it was easiest to get an old washing up liquid type bottle to put the sterilising solution in as you can squirt it into all the nooks and crannies and then scrub and slosh again.

ETS I did this two or three times a week.

If you have a decathlon near you their blue frog antibacterial/ santizer is brilliant stuff. Its cheap aswell

Pick out the feet everytime you check the horse and treat with any of the things suggested above.

thanks for the input and the very informative article.

my farrier says fresh-air is the best and i am wary of over-treatment that may dry the hoof out.

it was not till i had the thrush to deal with that i realised how deep the sulcus were so perhaps i did not clean and pick through enough.

i am just remembering something now.....,we had an aged pony on loan(few years ago) and at the time my farrier commented on how he had shrivelled frogs and must of had thrush at one time.
