Price for a good allrounder

Hi guys,

I am potentially thinking of selling my pony due to change in circumstances and life getting in the way. However I have no idea on price, so was hoping to pick your knowledgable brains.

He’s 8years old, warmblood x cob 15.3hh.

Has manners to die for;clips without even needing to be tied up, good with cattle and general farm stock, loads in anything (including a cattle wagon if needed), completely bombproof out hacking but will have a bit of a snort if a tractor has big machinery behind it but does nothing more than a snort and a look, will live out or stabled and happy on his own, will also happily stay in the trailer at shows on his own if his mate has left him.

Ridden wise we have done plenty of showing, always first or second at local level and then we have done a handful of county shows and hoys qualifiers where we have had 3rd to 6ths (if I’m honest it’s my riding that lets him down at the bigger shows due to nerves). We show as light weight cob or coloured classes

He does also take side saddle very well and we have competed up to prelim dressage on the wonk, I’ve not shown side saddle yet due to time. We have hunted sideways a couple of times.

He has been driven but only driven a few time on the road (my partner did it and then lost interest so not actually been driven for almost 12 months )

Dressage wise we regularly get high 60s at Elementary but I’ve never completed higher than that. Schools well at home in snaffle or double bridle.

Hunting is his passion. He will hunt all day, hedges, ditches etc not a problem. Never strong and happy to be up from, at the back or anywhere in between. I’ve also led ponies from him ( children the optional extra ) and he has been used by the “whip-in”. He also loves pleasure rides too.

Showjumping wise we have had clears at 80cm however it is not something I have facilities for or I enjoy so he’s not that experienced.

He does have a scar on his leg due to a field accident but easily covered for showing and has not been mentioned or marked down by a judge.

I am at a complete loss to what sort of price he’d be worth, and not in a hurry to sell him (nor have I made my mind up complete yet as I know he will be a very hard to replace if circumstances change in the future) as he is part unicorn (in my eyes) so know I may regret it

Depending on conformation and markings, £15-20k, assuming good vetting.

If he is very pretty then I would pitch at the higher end.

You only need one to get your price! I proved that many years ago, however, that's another story.

For me, in order to command the higher prices that are mentioned above, I would want to see conformation pictures. Many horses achieve things at a younger age but are unable to sustain that level due to wear and tear as a result of poor conformation.

Also, if he is a good hedge hunter I would certainly hope that he could be waggonned around more than an 80cm SJ course by a half decent amateur rider.

The dressage results sound good, but are they BD or unaffiliated? That could make quite a difference.

Does he move straight? What are his paces like? You say cob x warmblood, so are the paces an 8 affiliated or a 6 unaffiliated?
Any vices? Crib/weave etc? Vet history will also play a part. So many variables that without a video and more info it is hard to tell and even then, nothing beats a 'hands on'!

Thank you everyone for your reply’s, it’s much appreciated.
Dressage is BD, his trot is awesome and by far his best pace. Canter is an armchair canter but we do stuggle with counter canter as he will changes leg but we are working on it. . He also has no stable vices.

Confirmation wise he is very correct, has been used for YFC stock judging demos many occasions and his scores highly on our score sheets.
There is no reason why he shouldn’t pass a vetting however I have never had him vetted as brought him as a baby.

I have some serious thinking to do on what to do, thank you everyone.

Sorry, I know it was prices you were wanting but could you find a loan home for him until you're sure? Like you say there isn't one like him on every street corner.

another who would say around 15k, not only is he a fab all rounder from the sounds of it but he’s the age/height that’s in highest demand.

I would ask 15-16. He’s in a real sweet spot and a highly sought after type. Small enough for an older child but big enough for an adult, with the personality to work for either. And talented. If I hadn’t bought mine 4 months ago I’d be asking more info! If he’s pretty too then a massive bonus. Are you sure you want to sell him?!

If he really is as good as you say my thoughts are high teens pushing to 20k, providing he is great to hack both alone and in company, has potential to jump more than 80 with the right rider, would pass a vet with nothing more than a coverable scar and is nicely put together.
He is the dream size for many, big enough to take a lot of adults but small enough to take an older child coming off ponies. Is 15.3 on a life height cert or measured at home? If he's shown as a LW cob he sounds overheight.
He sounds very similar to one on our yard who is an absolute gem. If he ever went up for sale they would be queueing down the road to take him.

He sounds a lovely sort. I would have agreed 15k as others have said, but on looking recently, prices are definitely coming down - whether that's just the time of year, I'm not sure. Be optimistic and you'll soon gauge if he's priced too high!

I wouldn’t be selling that unicorn!! He sounds amazing, sorry I know that’s not what you asked
Agreed, some horses are priceless and he sounds like one you'd regret selling. I don't know the market he'd be aimed at very well but he sounds like he should be highly desirable and with a record BD, county level showing and hunting whilst being easy and ticking pretty much every box, I'd have thought you'd be able to get at least 15k and quite probably more for him.

If you have someone to hand that jumps he could do some BS on a ticket, if he hunts I'm guessing he's got a good jump on him and if he competes BD elem his schooling should be there for him to potentially be able to hop round a BN and Disc and that could help get the even higher prices but tbh I'm not sure he needs more of a record/ proof of ability and character.
