Price for a good first pony?

My boss has left a note on my desk asking for my comments on an advert one of our clients has given him...I won't put the exact wording, but its along these lines:

Pretty 12.2 Welsh Section A, 10 year old, ideal first or second pony, hacks alone or in company, done all PC activities, fully registered, perfect to do in every way, fully vac with 5 stage vet certificate, comes with all tack and rugs.

What price would you put on her?

I'd say from looking at similar ads, you'd see them at 2.5 - 3 - but of course I've no idea whether they get that money!
I know when I was looking for something like that I was not going to come away with any change out of £2500, and since I didn't have that kind of money to spend, we loaned!
Personally, I think that's silly money for a 12.2hh allrounder, but then I'm obviously in a minority of one

Looking at the photos, I wouldnt say she would win much in the show ring; perhaps best turned out etc, but she's quite rangy and wouldnt have the best confo in the world...

Why because of her age?
10 is as young as I would want for a first pony really, and probably another couple of decades to run!
 
I dont know much about breeding welshies, and wouldnt want to name her pedigree on here, but she is fully registered....even so, you don't really sell a first pony for breeding, do you? I thought the price was a little steep; however I guess a good first pony is worth what someone wants to pay for it! We had a lovely old girl - very similar in terms of ability, temperament and appearance in fact - and we bought her for £1500 when she was 26! Which, bearing in mind it was over 10 years ago, makes this little pony sound a good buy....tricky isnt it!!!
 
nope you wouldn't, but if your £4K goes lame or something, at least she has an alternative future!
You're right of course, she's worth what someone wants to pay. I mean there's 100% safe and 100% safe, isn't there? If you 've got a littlie, and you find a pony which is an absolute nursemaid and would give its life protecting your child, if you had £4k to spare, you'd pay it, wouldn't you?!
 
Are you sure she is welsh sec A because they cant go above 12hh for £4000 i expect it to have breed papers, you will put people off with incorrect info

She definitely has breed papers, and the ad shows the name of sire and dam (dont want to disclose here though). And it definitely says Sec A! From the photos, she certainly isnt Sec B, so either she is over height or they havent measured her right....
 
i good genuine ist pony is priceless, if sound etc £4000 is not expensive
this is the pony that your child learns on, i define i first pony as something a brass band can walk past, doesn't nap, kick rear and will happily pop a jump etc with the potential for the child to grow etc you are placing your young child on it, just because it doesn't have show potential doesn't mean its not worth its weight in gold. these ponies past through word of mouth if you find one there are as rare as hens teeth. i can only think of 2 i have meet, one looked like it should be a therwell card, taught 3 kids in the same family everthing ohh ps use to win every 12.2 under show jumping it did beat those ponies who had to be strapped down for the kid to control

the other one was over height 13.3 but bomb proof looked like a show pony, could jump a 3ft everyone in pony club wanted to ride him, and has no gone to another pc home for next generation to learn, he was sold at 13 for just under £4k

Oooooh - I have one of these plus she drives as well! I really must get round to finding her a home where she will be appreciated. She's great as a companion and to teach things to load but if she's worth that sort of money it's a real waste to have her standing around in the field.
 
Yeah, I dont get why a 10yr old would demand a lower price as someone has said. For a proper first pony, most parents WANT older ponies! Its the young ones who are harder to sell!

Id say £4k is way too much. For that sort of money, for that height of pony, Id expect it to be winning BSJA or winning showing etc. not just "done all PC activities" as any pony has done that. I wouldnt pay more than £2k for it personally.

10 is not old. its a good age for a first pony, anything younger and it would most likely be too immature for a child to learn on.

at the end of that day if its safe and realiable [as reliable as can be said for any horse!] then its worth as much as your prepared to pay for it. i would say as its £4k it may be a bit pricey. make sure its not too advanced for a first pony. a lot of people just write that in adverts to attract people to sell it. do as much homework on the pony as you can and as people have mentioned earlier check its breeding certificates and height etc. it cant be registered as a 12.2 if its section A so there may be a lack of truth there!

OP has said she doesn't have good conformation. If she doesn't have good conformation, she doesn't have broodmare potential, whatever her bloodlines, IMO!

And £4K sounds way too much for a pony with poor conformation, that is either an overheight Sec A or an off-type Sec B, and that hasn't really done anything! Unless she really is that absolutely bombproof, perfect, angelic first pony that everyone is looking for, I suppose...

I wouldn't say her age should count against her price, though - 10 sounds just about right for a first pony.
 
I THINK YOUR FIND ITS 12 -12.2 MOST SECTION A DO STAND AT 12HH BUT U CAN GET ONES THAT DO RANGE ABOVE THE AVERAGE HEIGHT

I'd agree with that. I'm looking for a first ridden and they are like gold dust. Someone may pay the £4k eventuially, worth asking as long as they aren't paying livery fees while they wait!
 
Yes FMM you are right , for registration purposes they have to be under 12hh .

I wouldnt pay anymore than £1200 for a first time pony .


I payed £350 for Tommy but Im pretty sure that was an absolute bargain

Hes got fab bloodlines , has been placed at every show, be jumping, working hunter, lead rein , first ridden, games and is fantastic out on the road, I just realised how good he was today , as I had my 2 boys out along with my sisters 2 kids out with me and they where brushing his legs, tail and of course tommy took it all in his stride . Hes taught tiarnan so much , tiarnan can now jump a course of small fences with him unaided and he can jump when he wants too .

Really does depend on what buyers what to buy .

but for me 4k is way over the top . hmm *wonders what I could I could get for tommy * ....yeah like tiarnan would ever let me

I WAS NOT TALKING ABOUT REG PURPOSE I WAS TALKING ABOUT HEIGHT AND JUST CORRECTING YOU ON THE HEIGHT I DO AGREE WITH YOU ON REG BUT IT DEPENDS ON WHERE IT WAS REGESTERED SHE NEEDS TO CHECK ON HEIGHT
 
ischa - why are you shouting?

A section A can be over 12hh and registered but is ineligable for showing purposes.
If I could get £4k for my boy I'd be VERY happy, he has proven his worth as a first pony and a show pony (Section A)
