Hi, my 7 year old horse needs a tooth removing. After x-rays yesterday a fissure is evident on the root of his tooth. I discovered the problem as he had a small hole (literally!) on the underside of his chin that was constantly weeping and didn't clear up with the help of anti-biotics. The vet has just quoted me £1,500 to £3,000, this sounds very steep for a tooth removal? Any advice very welcome, I just want to get him sorted. Thanks

Hi,Can fully sympathise as I am going through the same with my boy.He suddenly developed a huge swelling on his jawbone. He has had 2 head X-rays and he has no problem with the actual tooth which we can see but the vets say he has at some point had a bacterial infection in his bloodstream which has just pinpointed that tooth root and setting up calcification. He reacts to any touch on the tooth even heavily sedated,Was placed on a months antibiotics which settled it to start but then infection came back.He has been at vets for 2 weeks now on IV antibiotics and due to bring him home today.Got a call this morning to say that after only 2 days off IV the swelling has returned and are going to have to remove the tooth.I was quoted £1000-£2500.00. They are hoping to try today with a 2 hour standing sedation to remove it.He will then be in for a week for aftercare and to make sure it heals properly so no more infection sets in.Good luck with yours.

Thanks Happy talk, I will certainly check that out. It's actually a crack in the root (ouch!) so not sure if an extraction can be avoided, sadly, but I will investigate :)
