Hi I have a Shetland that I have just moved to a yard in Alfold, Surrey. I enquired about the farrier and the yard owner told me he charges £46 for a trim!! Now my Shetland gets looked at every 10 ish weeks sometimes he just needs a rasp and sometimes a tiny bit of trimming. I think £46 is a bit steep? Thoughts?

That is expensive. Round here it’s no more than £30 and that’s if it’s only one the farrier has to travel to. I pay £20 for each of my 3.

I have just changed to a very good trimmer who is also a qualified farrier, very well thought of but he does charge £40. I used to pay £30 but they were sore after every trim.

What ought the price to be?

Without sounding like I'm having a go, I personally think it's reasonable. After all, a good trimmer is keeping the horse sound wouldn't you say? A good trim by a skilled person should be the main cost to pay, the shoes (if you have any) are obviously extra but they should be applied to a good trim in the first place.

Training, equipment, fuel, car costs, living etc....

Sussex/Hampshire border: £50 per horse per trim by equine podiatrist. V expensive but he does a great job, turns up on time, almost never changes dates, answers communications promptly and will come over within 24 hours if there's an issue.

£25 per trim does three on the yard

Previous farrier was the same did about 10 on the yard

I once paid £40 for a trim, did four on the yard in the hour, for 15mins work I’d love to be paid £160 an hour for 3min journey to get there ?

Farriers are getting fewer and fewer, I honestly wish I’d went for it years ago when it crossed my mind.

We are incredibly lucky. Our farrier has now given up shoeing and just does trimming, charges us £20 per horse. He has been our farrier for something like 40 yrs and is now I think 72, just slightly younger than me. Our horses mostly self trim and we tidy them up, he sorts them out properly 3 or 4 times a year. I dread the day he fully retires.

I pay £55 per horse for our Equine Podiatrist, every four weeks. We are near Oxford.

I do really rate my EP though, so I don’t begrudge a penny.
Similar here, £40 per horse from my EP, so £80 every 7 weeks. She's great though, worth every penny!
She's here for at least 2 hours most times, so I don't begrudge her the odd time where there's less to do. She's a wealth of knowledge such a lovely person to boot!
