Just wondering what people are paying for bute at the moment. ( for elderly arthritic pony who just needs a bit now and then) Last box of 100 from vet £167. They charge £30 for a written prescription. This is just equipalazone. Trying to work out if cheaper to get a prescription and buy on line next time. What do others do?

I think on line is going to be cheaper but which company to go with? prescription fairly expensive at £30 and not sure how long it lasts or how many you can buy on one prescription.

You can get 6 months supply on one prescription. For me that meant 3 boxes on a dosage of up to 2 per day.

The companies I've used let you buy one box at a time as long as the whole prescription is used within 6 months. Some even email to remind you if the prescription is about to run out.

I've used evet, vetimed pet drugs online amongst others with.no problem. Those tended to be the cheapest when I was buying.

I recently bought a box of 100 from eVetDrug for £76.59 plus prescription fee, which I think was £20. So it's about £1 per sachet. That was the best price I could find. Apple flavoured would've been a bit cheaper but I had a panic wobble that he wouldn't eat those* so bought the standard flavour at the higher price. Obviously it would've worked out cheaper still for a bigger prescription, but I hopefully won't need any more.

I had been buying Bute via the vet (which was pricey!) but when it became apparent I was going to need it for several months, I asked for a prescription instead, which was no problem at all.

*Don't know why. He eats everything else....

When I asked my vets about getting prascend and danilon on prescription rather than buying it through them they were very awkward. They said they could only give me a month's prescription at a time and i would have to pay a fee for each prescription. They said they'd have to see the pony more often, therefore making it more expensive for me not to use them. They're the only local vet that covers horses unfortunately.

Info here from viovet

They can't do extra check ups if they wouldn't require it when selling you the drug themselves however in both cases, they need to see the horse every 6 months.
