In June I had a 60 sachet box of Danilon from the vet which cost £112.40 inc vat. Septembers vet bill arrived this morning and the same box of 60 has increased to £167.76. I nearly fell off the chair. I’m sure there’s a valid reason for the increase but how on earth can it have gone up by over £55 in less than three months.

Has your vet been taken over by one of the big groups?

Out of curiosity I went to see how much Bute was, used to buy it online regularly and it has gone up significantly, about 30% in the last year.

Used to use vetimed, petdrugsonline and vetuk depending on what I was buying. Most let you keep a prescription on file so if it's for several boxes you don't have to buy them all at once.

Yes, I lodge the prescription with Viovet and choose whether to get the meds sent out on demand as I need them or sent out on a regular delivery. As long as all the meds are sent out before the 6 month prescription expires, you have control. It works faultlessly.

As it happens, I get Danilon on demand and Prascend on a regular delivery.

Oh goodness, please stop buying it from your vet!

My vets practice refused to issue a six monthly prescription and would only issue a monthly one, so I would get charged a prescription fee each month meaning it was cheaper to buy drugs from the vet.

How do the prescriptions work? I use a sachet a day so would need 3 boxes over the 6 months. Could I buy all 3 boxes at once?

Yes or you could buy them one at a time. You upload your prescription and when you buy they check it and how much you've already bought.

I normally use Animed for prascend and danilon, and they hold the prescription online so I can buy one box at a time (the prescription is for 6 months worth). It is really easy.
My vets have actually just started doing a medication price match! You basically send them the cheapest online price you've found for the medication you need and they will match it! I find this astonishing as their mark up used to be huge.

Can they do this, if it's for a long term use item like Prascend or Danilon?

My vet matches the online price of prascend if I pay on collection of the box ?
Mine does it for Prascend and Bute. The receptionist said they do on all common meds. I think from memory I save about £70 on a box of Prascend!

OP it’s worth asking if they will price match if it’s more convenient. It makes me cross when people are struggling to afford meds when there’s such a mark up from vets. A friend was considering pts until I told her about the price match. I wonder how many people just don’t know.

If some vets can match the online price for some customers who query the price, why aren't they offering that automatically to all customers by just charging that price instead? It annoys me when less aware customers get charged a much higher price just because they are less aware.

The ones offering it as standard to all customers must be having to make good their loss of revenue somewhere else, I guess.

my vets dont offer price match unless you ask... but saying that i had an agreed price match with the senior partner and last time a bod in accounts decided not to honour it ... my danilon was approx £240 rather than the approx £168 agreed..... i did a little rant and another vet said they would price match. i decided against buying from vet as cant trust reception / accounts staff to honour this.

about a month ago weldricks pharmacy were cheapest by far... just checked £74.40 for 60 sachets

I have just tried to reorder from Animed, and three weeks later I still haven't received it but more worrying, they have not responded to my emails, either from their website or through Paypal.

'Due to the recent launch of our new warehouse system this is causing delays with some orders being dispatched. This means that our email response times are longer due to the number of queries we are receiving.

We usually aim to answer all emails in 1 – 2 working days and this can be longer over the weekend or on a Bank Holiday. At the moment response times will be longer so please allow up to 5 working days to hear from us.
If you have sent us an email and have not yet received a reply please do not send a further email as we will respond as soon as we can'

I got it through Petsdirect, as I was out paying extra for postage in two days. Trying to get my money back through Paypal for the Animed order.

Im shocked at how much the price has gone up over the years from viovet. Used to be so cheap. Ive been using weldricks aswell, they have been good.
Managed to not need danilon over the summer this year so next box will be expensive due to needing a vet visit and a prescription.
Medication checks are so pointless when you pay full call out charge for them to ask how shes been and dont even physically check her!
