Hi

How much can you expect to pay for a second-hand 3.5 tonne box or trailer that is reliable, safe, does the job but doesn't have to look or be flashy? Wondering whether to start saving up or if it is a pipe dream!

Thanks

It seems 2nd hand 3.5t horse boxes that are actually safe and reliable are like gold dust, I've just had to fork out and have my own converted because i couldn't find anything reasonable. A decent 3.5t van conversion i would say is from £8,000 upwards. Anything cheaper tends to have ridiculous high mileage and shabby conversions. I think you can get a decent trailer from £2000 though! Which makes me wonder why I've gone and paid for a horse box now :D

I agree with Sparkeyboy - the safe and reliable ones are like gold dust. I bought mine two years ago for 3.5k and spent 1k on mechanical maintenance (It's a VW LT35). It was recently converted and my mechanic said the horse section was super safe and well-constructed. He did however they this was unusual and a good find. I'm moving up to a 7.5ton later in the year and already have people asking about buying mine. Good luck with your search, there are definitely good 3.5tns out there but they might be hard to find.

There has been a new conversion for sale locally - they did two and have sold one so far - personally I wouldn't put my shopping in it but clearly someone bought one - that was up for £8k - it had a pretty paintjob, that was where the quality ended.....

Friend sold an older Master conversion a while ago for around £4k - was solid and safe but old and was heading for some mechanical stuff needing to be done.

Another friend is buying a smart coachbuilt one which she is paying a few pounds shy of £20k for.

If I was looking I would expect to pay £10-12k minimum for a 3.5t based on what I have seen in the past - that is why I have a 7.5t as I could get a much newer lorry for my money!

You can get a reasonable quality older Ifor Williams for about £2K. If you have a suitable car to tow it with that would probably be the cheapest option.

Thanks everyone! Confirms my thoughts a bit. Might hire for a while to see what he likes travelling in and I prefer to drive before taking the plunge. Nothing to tow with unfortunately or I'd defo go for the trailer! Time to save up....

I bought a 3.5t box late last year for £1.5K its years and years old, it needed £800 worth of work but its up and running fine now

It looks like nothing on this earth but its been checked over and given the ok

Lots of people have turned their noses up at it and told me that I needed to spend a lot more money but at the end of the day its transport and freedom and I am satisfied that I'm not putting my ponies at increased risk
