Sounds good I’m theory but three local riding schools recently closed down. None of which had any nice hacking or decent horses. Hence why I only ride once a week on the posh boy!

I was saying even if there were riding schools, you wouldn't get a hack or lesson for what you're paying and probably not so nice a horse. The cheapest one round here is £50 for an hour and the posh ones a lot more.

I don't think in term of percentages because it's not an equal relationship. The owner makes all the decisions and has control over the horse.

I always charged something even when it wasn't about the money as with a couple of exceptions people seemed better at turning up when they were paying. If you've paid for something, you feel you're missing out if you don't use it. Another person didn't charge but as the horse was on DIY, the sharer had to cover the livery if they weren't going to turn up which at the time was £10 for a day's full cover.

Ah I see! Yes you’re right. It’s never perfect but then even owning isn’t perfect. I’m lucky when the vet bills roll in which they inevitably do. I don’t have to pay them.

Depends why you’re looking to loan out. If it’s financially motivated then that’s one thing, if it’s time or doing a nice thing that’s another.

I would be tempted to give them a 6 week trial and say that they have to pay for a set of shoes, have a weekly formal lesson and provide proof of insurance and sign an indemnity.

Then at the end of the 6 weeks have a discussion as to what is working well, not so well etc and assess what contribution is required on an ongoing basis. And potentially, ability and transport depending, whether additional fee due for competitions fun rides etc

OP i think you need to consider which is more important, the horse having the extra exercise/attention or do you need the money

I have a lady comes to ride one of mine, because of the way it's all set up at home she can't just see to the one pony. We ride together and she will poo pick/do other jobs if needed
She did ask how much, but for me it isn't about the money.

I think this is a good point. In order, I would say that what is more important is:
- wanting this very sweet girl to have a nice horse to ride in the place that suits them, as their current share is moving and they don't really want to go to the other yard. They are a lovely family and I like having them around.
- extra exercise as I struggle to keep two in enough work
- financial

That said, they pay currently for their share which I believe is 3/7 of the cost and I do believe it's fair to ask a reasonable amount for the use of a very nice horse. As others have said, it may make people more dedicated/reliable if they are paying, and obviously the money would be nice if not essential.

Before I bought mine, I paid £120 per month for x 3 days a week, plus any jobs. He was essentially ‘mine’ that day, but I only had to go once as YO on site. She has a few so we would all kind of help out with jobs, but they mainly live out. I would also contribute to shoes each cycle.
