Price of shavings - OMG!!!!!

Heard a rumour last night that the price of shavings is going to go through the roof in the winter. Apparently going to be a shortage due to them being a by-product of the timber trade and with no new homes being built due to credit crunch, timber trade is going to suffer.

Heard that they were going to be a minimum of £9 per bale - OMG I go through about 3 a week so no way can afford that!
Anyone else heard the same thing?????

Yes I have! and I can see this happening over the winter TBH- there probably will be a shortage and it doesnt help that they are using woodshavings on the continent for heating their homes so they arent sending so many bales over here!

I get my bedding delivered in bulk and shopped around to get them for 6.50.

feed/beddingshops around here are selling for about £7.40 a bale and a couple of places were selling for £7.85- really awful prices!
 
£4.60 per bale for shavings for me! Have them delivered in bulk 72 at a time, split between a few of us. Have 16 at the mo, horses living out. Minimal bed when they are in during the day.

I looked into getting Ecobed but they said they don't have suppliers in Sussex- thats interesting its called Bedexel- I didn't know that- its definitely a lot cheaper than shavings- I may get some to try!

I use either Flax (4.95 in bulk) or Ecobed (cardboard, 5.50 in bulk). Love them both.

your cardboard is expensive go to Ecobale its the same but cheaper xx

try ecobale they definately deliver down here - well to me in kent !!!
 
Well I use straw, and I'd swear by it- ok I get it cheaper becuase I live on a farm, but I like big fluffy full beds!. We have nedzbed at work and I have to ask- how the hell do you lot stay sane mucking out shavings etc???? Drives me bloody potty, straw all the way

I use aubiose and it was £9 a bale last winter (always an expensive supplier though, but convenient) but as I only use half a bale a week, it is very economical - plus quick to do - plus light- plus warm- plus everything! If you gave me free bedding of any other description, I'd still buy aubiose.
 
I live on a farm too and i must say straw is easier in some ways as i can get it...but with weather during harvest sometimes not great we have found its not as dry and "fresh" when it is baled and gets very dusty.

Digby spreads everything so actually shavings is much easier as i can pick it out.
 
I have looked into getting rubber matting, but am a bit hesitant as my boy loves rolling in his bed and not convinced a rubber one will go down to well!
Just found a very well known manufacturer and to cover the floor in my two stables will cost £869.90!!!!!! Ah hem, hmmmmmmmm I think not!!!!!
 
We are selling shavings at £6.50, but find we sell more miscanthus, which is £5.95.

For rubber matting, try Carpetpac, I found them on ebay, we coolected our mats from them (near Coventry), I think they were about £24 each for 6' x 4', and we're really pleased with them.
 
Shavings at west country feeds are £7.10!!!!

Luckily I have rubber matting and use aquamax. We got a huge pallet delivered to the in-law's farm and it's worked out between 4 and 5 a bag, which is great because it also goes further and does a better job than shavings!

I nearly had a heart attack having been out of husbandary for a year.my shavings are at 6.50 a bale. for 7.50 you can get auboise...wheres the sense in that??????

I currently go to a place where if i get 100 bales i pay about £3.50!!

if i get about 20 still about £4 a bale !! and they big packed bags same as from other merchants all properly bagged and packed!

If you buy over 150 then even cheaper!!!!!

aaaghhnh. Wish I could go on straw, available at the farm where I rent a paddock, at £1 a bale, however they all cough on straw

Seriously though I cant afford £9 a bale..... I will have to switch back to Sundown Red or something like that.
 
We are selling Woodpecker at £7.90 now. Scary how much RRP on them has gone up over the last 6 months. I am not suprised at all to think it will go up again over winter.
 
Find a local joiner, who will probably be very happy you want to take them off their hands! They can be dusty but if you water them and leave to settle for 20 mins before returning horse, there shouldn't be a problem.

We have 2 joiners in the units on our yard, who donate them to us. Otherwise they have to dump them in a field, where our muck heap ends up everytime it's emptied, so it is easier for them to give them to us, than take them half a mile down the road to dump them.
