Hi,

Anyone whos been to Ireland recently (mainly Goresbridge Performance horse sales) how much approx are the horses going for at the moment? We are looking for something big, safe and youngish thats maybe started a bit of hunting or sj. I have read in the past that prices have shot down due to their sturggling economy.

Thanks guys :D

I don't ever buy from the sales but was, for the first time ever, at Goresbridge in March to buy a horse that I had been told about through a contact. I was amazed at the prices - umimpressive RC horses were selling for 5K and more - so far from cheap.

Luck of the drawer (or the Irish!) some nice stuff sells cheap. Really nice little mare went couple of years ago for £500 at performance sales - wish I had got her at that price. Same sale had an eventer that had done a 1* went for £2700, he had been for sale over here at £10k.

You will still pay decent money for decent horses over here and to be honest the way to find the cheap gems is DON'T go to the sales! I know hundreds of people who won't sell through the sales as it costs €3-400 to go through the ring by the time you have vet, transport, sales entry etc paid and if you are only going to get €1000-1500 it is not worth it! The hard up have to be sold and quickly are out there at dirt cheap prices but you have to approach them with a very open mind and don't expect them to be sales ready! donedeal is a good place to start but it is a very lightly regulated site so you will see all sorts there

Ive been to all the Cavan and Goresbridge sales this year and the prices havent been cheap but I have bought at least one very nice horse, good breeding etc for a reasonable price. I am extremely careful and dont take chances on anything remotely dodgy just because its cheap! The biggest problem is the large english dealers buying everything and pushing the prices sky high, I would love to know who they sell them on to!!!! I have a lovely large 4yo lovely temperament for sale from one of my earlier trips,pm me if you want details.

Echo amage - good horses still get good money :)

The poor end of the market is dirt cheap - but the demand for riding club horses here is still quite big! :)

You can buy youngstock especially tbs for about 300 euro!

Well to add a slightly different side to everyone else, I went to the last sales at Cavan and bought my lovely young horse. He is green but oh so classy and a true gentleman and everyone loves him - hoping he will go far :) and I paid about half of what I was prepared to pay for him!! So there definitely are bargains to be had. If I were to sell him on now, I'd be wanting a good 4-5k over what I paid for him. It was my first trip to the sales so maybe I was just lucky!!

I went last July and prices were definately down. Looks a good list for May sales, am tempted, but prices sound like they will be up on last year.

Riaseed - have you still got your chestnut? loved reading your reports.

Hi sare_bear. I very sadly lost him in a freak accident in his stable about 2 months ago. I haven't posted much lately so it didn't seem right to do a post about it. Will maybe do a brief update on my ever-changing situation soon when I get around to it (meant to be getting my head down with uni work right now!!)
