Prices of puppies!!!

Hi All.

Been having a nose at puppies and prices and i cannot believe they can charge so much money for a cross breed or a mongrel!

Cockapoo and sproodles and labradoodles are £750

Yet a full pedigree dog and some are kennel club registered are alot cheaper

Sheer MADNESS!!!

Half of thses new designer breeds aren't proven and no ones knows what problems they will develope or prone to!!!

i know.

im wanting a toy poodle (KC reg ) and the most popular ones that keep cropping up are the "cockerpoo" or poodle x spaniel etc..... £6/700 - nothanks!

i have my name down on a red boy toy poodle!! (i know slim chance!) with a good KC reg'd breeder etc... :)

just far too many crosses - lovely dogs but asking for health problems imo.
 
Keep looking and listen in on people conversations in the feed store :D We got our Cairn for £275 just by being in the right place at the right time. They sold 7 puppies in a day!

Well, if the punters would not pay such prices they would have to be sold for less! Supply and demand!! And by the same token if purchasers asked for a written statement of soundness prior to purchase less un-healthy/sound puppies and horses come to that would be bred in the first place.

Here (NE Scotland) puppies are considerably less in the papers than they were 2 years ago.
 
The price of some of the crosses is ridiculous. But the thing that frustrates me the most is the fact that a lot of them a 'marketed' as proper breeds by giving them names such as cockerpoos, labradoodles etc. We run a boarding kennels and have several clients who are convinced that their crossbreed is a proper breed because some unscrupulous breeders have convinced them so.

I think its frustrating that they're sold for so much more than pure bred, KC registered pups from health tested parents....I think I must be doing something wrong by spending hundreds of pounds on health tests for my dogs!

I ask what the dam was and mark them in a that breed cross -if they don't know,and a lot who have paid serious money do not know which parent was what breed - I mark the breed as crossbreed on the boarding contract.
While people keep humouring these misguided individuals the unscrupulous will keep on producing & selling them.

I had someone ask me about getting a cockerpoo a a few days ago. They had been told a load of lies and were planning to pay around £900 for a non shedding, none barking, rose scented poo producing puppy. I asked if the price included having sucker tattooed on her forehead. They had picked that "breed" because they were cute and healthier than KC registered dogs. Someone had seen PDE and realised there was money to be made perhaps?

Turns out they didn't like cockers and had never met a poodle.
 
I wouldnt buy dog on principle now there are so many unwanted dogs and puppies that need loving homes.I rescued/rehomed my dog he was 4 months old and full pedigree australian shepherd ,previous dog was golden retriever that we picked especially because they are fab with kids.As my children are all grown I felt it best to rehome.There are some wonderful dogs that need rehoming some breeders care more about the money than making sure dogs go to good homes,at least rescue centres do proper check ups.

Hmm. I will be buying my next dog.
I don't feel bad about wanting my puppy to be from a KC breeder,and feel that while re homing is a very valuable and noble thing to do if everyone stopped buying well bred KC pups there would be none left to buy!
backyard breeders are the ones responsible for the surplus not good breeders who spend a not so small fortune health checking breeding stock and bringing up the pups well- they deserve our support.

Backyard breeders are the ones responsible for the surplus not good breeders who spend a not so small fortune health checking breeding stock and bringing up the pups well- they deserve our support as much as the local rescue ;)
 
Just because a dog is KC registered is no guaratee of good health, nor of it being free of various nasty genetic disorders, depending on the breed.

A X bred will only be as good/healthy as its parents and whilst there should be more hybrid vigor if both or one parent has a genetic problem such as hip dysplasia there is every liklyhood that so will their puppies.
 
Go to a Kennel Club accredited breeder who will have had their stock officially tested
and certified for any hereditary aliment that affects their breed,not a 100% guarantee of course but the best a responsible breeder who really cares about thir breed can do/You might have to wait as most good breeders have a waiting list but surely a quality puppy is worth waiting for.

A good breeder will not put a good KC registered stud dog to a dog of a different breed. They have pride in what they breed. Sorry to say but these cross breeders are putting pure breds onto pure breds without actually knowing what they are doing. They were selling cross breeds in Harrods the last time I went and they were £1,0000.

Research your breeder, talk to people who have their young stock, dogs are expensive and I do wonder why people don't do more research. They basically ring up a random advert and go from there. Good breeders don't need to advertise as above they have a waiting list.

KC registration in itself is not, but the health testing of potential breeding stock combined with the hours of research that goes into selecting a stud combined with generations of veterinary history from known stock means the odds of a healthy dog from a good KC breeder are very good.
No good breeder would breed for cash, they do it to produce good quality examples of a breed they not only love but have spent years investing in.

There simply is not that level of health checks and care taken over crosses.

Hybrid vigour is a myth peddled by breeders of crosses to sell stock over KC reg pups.
The same people who insist a Labrador poodle cross wont shed hair :rolleyes:

I am happy to believe it is a valid point in a dingo that has to be healthy to make it to breeding age, but not a first generation designer cross.

True,but the dog world is small and kennels get a name for themselves.
Good ones get glowing reports while gossip about the Del Boy types spreads pretty fast too ;)


You can never be sure the puppy you select will be free of health complaints, no matter how much care is taken by the breeder but why increase the odds of an unhealthy animal with no idea what it is likely to turn out like when for less money in most cases you could have a health tested puppy from a reputable breeder.

A while ago I would have said I agreed with you absolutely 100%.

However last summer we did something we always thought we'd never do and bought a puppy. We already had two rescue dogs, each with their own emotional baggage, and the requirements for our next dog were just so restrictive that we had little choice but to go for a breed that we knew would have the maximum chance of fitting into our little family happily.

We did try the rescue route first, however the response from most was that we were being far too picky about what we were willing to home and we'd never get what we wanted. Some of them were downright rude to us and one rather well known charity told us we might as well just go buy a puppy out of the free-ads :eek:

We made the decision to buy from a good breeder of a breed we knew would be the most likely to fit in with our family and it's worked absolutely perfectly. It was definitely the right thing both for our current dogs and for us. We're supporting a good breeder who is breeding with care to try and improve their breed and our dogs are all the happiest they've ever been.

I also agree with what Onyxia said, it's not the reputable breeders that cause the problem but BYBs who are doing such great business because of the amount of people who don't do their research and aren't prepared to wait to get a pup from anywhere, regardless of health testing or breeding ethics.
