Am looking for a Welsh Cob foal and am suprised at prices of private Welsh Cob foals advertised.
Does £1500 for a filly and £1000 for a colt sound alot?
Anyone have any idea what sort of prices Welsh Cob foals should be at Cob sale next month at Builth Wells or Hay on Wye sale?

Any information greatly receieved.

Thank you

Those prices are a tad on the high side for private sales. Our colt foal was £850 with the very, very best of bloodline and he is a cracking wee man. Sales go either way. They either go up a few hundred or down a few hundred quid depending on who/what is there.

Prices vary greatly at the sales depending on what you want and how fussy you are.

Last year we went to get a nice sort. First nice one I fancied went for £7000, second one went for £11000!! Ones inbetween went for £60-600.

All depend on blood lines, past winnings, the colour and markings and who's selling it.

I ended up buying a jet black sec A yearling colt with 4 stockings and a blaze with floating paces for £90, and paid £350 for rather scruffy looking liver chestnut colt to make 15.2h, Welsh Sec D X TB by Fronarth Victor. Both turned into fab sorts.

Folk up here in Scotland are selling yearling colt Sec d's for about £300.

I'd say very overpriced.

Foals go for nothing sadly, especially the autumn sales.

You'll get something decent without breaking £200 easily. But personally they'd have to pay me! 4 years is a long time to be feeding and worming an ornament :)

If you buy privately you can choose from anything that's advertised, if you buy at the sales you can only choose from what's there.
We are going to Fayre Oaks but have already bought our quota of foals, glad really as there aren't a lot of foals in the catalogue this year whereas we paid deposits early on in the summer, viewed at royal welsh time & will pick up at FO.
Yes there will be some good foals at the sales but usually the best are bought before the entries go in. Depends what you are after.

I think i will take a trip to the auctions. Anyone have any experience of hay on wye and welsh cob foals from there? With the numbers entered theres sure to be some with in my price range.

I want something that will make 15.1HH ish, prefer filly, that i can in hand show with success and something ultimatley that will make an allrounder. Prefer them to have white legs and white face!

The ones with white legs & face usually make more than the plain ones ;) I'm a fan of 4 whites & a blaze too, costs a fortune in chalk though when there are 16 white legs to do lol.
Good luck, let us know how you get on.

That's a little harsh! Without seeing the animal in question's conformation/action/breeding it's impossible to say what it's worth.
With regard to the sales prices vary massively. From well into 5 figures right down to the 'upset' price. You could easily get a bargain from Builth or Hay on Wye but if I had to choose I'd go Builth. There is more quality there and though there will be some going for big money you can still get a bargain and there's a lot to choose from.

That's why I love the Cs EKW lol though I'm rapidly becoming a B convert. Mind you my latest purchase has more white than I'm used to but at least is still pbw ;)
The Ds get away with less white but still nothing smarter than 4 even whites trotting round the ring :)
