Hi all.
I have been given a list of prices by the YO of the yard I am moving to in a few weeks. She has also said I can order in if I prefer as there is storage space provided but I have no idea of costs per horse. My horse has never been stabled before and any haylage costs over winter were covered by livery cost, not added on.
She charges £7 per bale of bedding and I wondered how long you would assume a bale to last or how many will I get through a week? (She will be in overnight during winter for probably around 15 hours a night).
Equally, she charges £3 per slice of small bale of haylage. I've only ever used the really large bales for a large turned out herd so how much is that roughly in KG?
I will of course check when I get there but I am trying to do some financial workings out beforehand.
Do your YO's provide these things or do you order in from elsewhere?
Thanks!

Assuming the bedding is shavings that sounds about right. You will probably need between 1 and 2 bales per week. I don't know how small her small bale haylage is but £3 per slice sounds a bit steep.

Bedding (if shavings) sounds very reasonable, but the haylage sounds overpriced. If you feed 2 slices a night (which I would think would be a minimum depending on horse) this is £6 per night... You can get a small bale of hay for £3-£5 depending on location.

£3 per slice of haylage!!! that will mean most people trying to cut down on consumption and horses getting ulcers or worse, most of mine get through a couple of slices each night from a big bale at that rate it would be costing about £12 per night, if I were you I would buy in what you need, it is easy to store small bales then at least you know you are only paying for what you use, would there be room to buy in a big bale or buy one to split between another livery to save on costs.
The shavings sounds fair enough, you will probably need 1-2 per week depending on how dirty she is, not forgetting the start up costs of getting a good bed down.

£7 a bale of shavings is ok if it is being supplied for you. You can probably source it cheaper if you can order a few at a time. 2 bales a week is a fair estimate while stabled overnight but you may need more or less depending on how you manage your bedding, how ling your horse is in and how messy it is.

£3 a slice of small bale haylage sounds extortionate! Horsehage is about £7 for a whole small bale, and you can probably buy a large square bale of farmers made haylage for about £20. A small bale of hay will probably cost you about £3 -£4 depending upon how much you can store.

I pay £7.08 for a 25kG bale of shavings but I buy a pallet load of 36 at a time. Normally they are more than this.
£3 for a slice of hay or haylage is extortionate and you would be better off buying your own in if there is storage space. If you do go for this option make sure you store it on top of pallets and under a tarp.

I pay £35 for a big round haylage bale ive a skinny horse who has a huge haynet every night and a small one in his field on a morning and it lasts me at least a month.
I pay around £7 a week for shavings and would need 2 a week if hors in that long at night though I prefer straw as even when he has a dirty week at worse I go through 3 leaves and it costs me £20 for a large Heston bale which again easily lasts a month so less than one bale of shavings per week

Thank you all, i'll be checking around for haylage prices then!

I noticed on the price list that she also put this
"£43 per month per equine for 9-10kg of forage per day" - Is this just saying that instead of ordering slices or bales, you can pay for the month and your horse will get this amount put into it's stable? I hope this isn't the YO charging extra for grazing??

Could it be a case of the £43 a month being the standard and if you use more than this, you pay the extra £3 a section?

I pay £15 a week for ad lib haylage in winter and my two 16.3/17hh good doers eat about 8kgs a night. They have it in their hay bars so aren't restricted but they won't eat more than this as neither is greedy. They're in for about 12 hours and even in winter their grazing is fairly good so this supplements grass rather than being their only source of forage (like yours by the sound of it). The £43 sounds a lot more like an average cost and considering the shavings are pretty reasonable a lot more what I'd expect.

Are you sure she said small bale and not (large) square bale? £3 for a section of one of those would sound about right?

Our YO cuts her own hay and charges £30 per month for us to use as and when we want. We don't take the micky and only use what our horses need. I usually get through one small and one large net (3/4 packed) per day in the summer (690KG WB horse) and two large and one small nets tightly packed in the winter per day. The winter is no grass turnout but 2 hours in a sandpit (which is good for my horse).

This is why I was confused as well, as the other prices (generally) seemed reasonable for services etc. We are only communicating via email for now and I'm taking these prices from the livery agreement that she has sent to me. I have it here and *Copy and paste* "£3 per slice for small bale haylage". I'd be happy with the £43 per month as my girl is a good doer and she is only about 14.3hh so I wouldn't expect her to get through more than that!

Do you know what the bedding is?

£7 for decent dust extracted shavings is good. £7 for dusty shavings or one of the budget chip beddings is not so good, I can buy both of those for under £5 a bale

It doesn't say. Just £7 for bale of bedding.

If it was me, I'd just ask the questions outright: 'Can I just check the bedding is shavings' & 'So I pay £43 a month for hay/haylage & £3 per section if I need more than that?' I'd also ask if you can buy your own bedding & hay if you chose to.

It's probably better asking her directly, as she's the only one that will really know :) And if you don't like the answers - well better you find out now instead of when you move in!

Haylage, big bales, is £4 a slice at my yard. This makes about 7 small haynets or 4 big overnight nets plus a small breakfast net for a 15.1 cob. Dunno if that helps. I did weigh them to start with but don't do it anymore.

Does she allow you to use straw? if so i'd buy a big bale of straw - about 10 - 20 quid around me for a round bale of straw. For one horse this will last you a decent amount of time.

would def ask around other liveries before you move here-i am so sick of getting ripped off by YO who have you captive there-either pay or go!!! I have had to pay way more that I should in the past as was waiting to for hubby to move jobs and went to a lovely farm who did not rip me off-what is it with these people???
