I went to try a horse last night, he was lovely but when we went to jump a frankly tiny jump he launched and I lost my balance and ended up in the dirt

I ended up with a bruised and bloody nose and a broken finger

I was so embarassed and felt such an idiot, the people selling were lovely and kind, stupid thing is I really like the horse but they're hardly going to want to sell it to me now. No point to this post, just feeling rather bruised and pathetic this morning.
 
Don't worry - every horse takes some getting used to! If you're still interested in the horse, call them up and ask to go and see it again. If they think you are a nice rider and will look after their horse well, they aren't going to mind if you fall off it once in a while!

Bad luck about the finger and bruising.
 
Don't worry I'm sure its happened to loads of people. I'm sure if the people selling liked you and your riding it won't matter in the slightest. Why don't you ring them and have a chat about it?
 
My horse is an ex hurdler. when i first jumped her (little little jumps) she absolutely leaped into the air as if she was jumping something on the badminton course!!!! and of course i hit the deck... alot. she still does it now but ive learned to prepare myself for it. point is if your not expecting it its hard to stay on board.

I agree with everyone else -give them a call.
 
i tried out a pony for a child once and it bolted with me up the bridle path flat out, just managed to stay on, hence no good as childs pony but i bought it for myself as a fun runaround, he was a brill pony but only good on the lead rein for kids, i would go back and have another look if your still interested
 
Poor you, don't feel silly though, jumping a horse you are not used too is always a hairy experience. Don't forget, he might have done an erratic leap and you felt unfamiliar to him as well.

I agree with Mialottzo, if you like the horse call back and arrange another viewing. Try to laugh the fall off (despite the sore finger and nose).
 
I went to see an ID 4 year old a couple of years back. The owner wouldn't get on it as she said she had a broken finger! (I should have known then) When I got on, I hadn't even got my leg over let alone in the stirrups when it bronked for England!! She let go of it and I reckon I stayed on for about 5 huge bucks before hitting the deck!! I was really embarrassed and angry with the owner, but these things happen.
Don't let it put you off. It is nervewracking getting on and jumping a strange horse.
 
Oh no. Sorry you are hurt.

If it makes you feel better, I went to see a horse who nipped me within 5 minutes...... not aggressively but was mouthing at my top. Rode him in the school and was off in 3 minutes flat when he dodged a puddle and nearly took a jump that was in the school. Was very embarrassed (SP) he was not the one for me though, felt very much out of my depth as was looking for a first horse confidence giver.....
 
When I was selling a mare, a lovely family came to try her. She spooked and took off with the mum, but stopped quite quickly, and when the daughter jumped her, she fell off!
However they really liked her and vetted and bought the horse, and she is still with them 6 years on. I could see they were quite able to handle Gabby, and they just needed to get to know each other.
 
I would agree - there's nothing worse than trying to jump a strange horse, especially in front of its owners!

If you like the horse, I'd give it another go as everyone else has said.
 
Phone them up ask a friend to come a long and also jump it or even better your instrutor, then you can just ride it on the flat and if they think it is an honest jumper you can learn to stay on if and when you buy it
 
Ah, you poor thing. I'm sure they'd be impressed if you rang them and said you were still interested - it shows you understand that riding has its ups and downs!

Try not to think too much about what has happened, the more you think about it the more likely it is to become a confidence issue.

The second time I tried out Missy I went to jump the smallest x-pole you've ever seen, she stopped twice then stopped and lept it (literally went straight up pretty damn high!) so of course she out-jumped me completely then bucked......then bucked again and I ate turf

Sorry you have been hurt, I echo what the others have said really, maybe go back and see it again. I bet the owners are embarrassed too but hey, it happens to us all! I have been bolted with round a field by an Arab "who had never done that before" and also broncked off a warmblood in front of Carl Hester, so these things do happen!! Good luck!
 
Aww poor you .... Like majority of the posters on this thread it has happened to quite a few of us , the last mare I had , had a huge jump, I wasnt prepared for it at all, ended up her neck before finally getting myself into the saddle .


If you like the horse give the owners a call back and have a chat about it .

Poor you! I agree with the other posts though, if you like the horse do give the owners a call. Trying horses is always a total nightmare

. To add to things I decided to go to the hospital this am and the finger is fractured but it was also dislocated and the dear doc just yanked it back in - there is now a dent in the hospital ceiling where I hit it

! I have now got to wear a splint on it for 6weeks

Anyway I've spoken to the the owners who it turns out were feeling equally awful, I have arranged to go back and see him next weds, they have other people coming to see him before then, so if he sells then so be it, if not maybe he is the one!
