I'm thinking of buying a broodmare by him but I'm told Prince of Darkness may not have had the best temperament and that many of his offspring inherited this. Does anyone know anything about him and if this is true?
 
I wouldn't know about his offspring but I do know about Prince of Darkness. He was one of the old HIS sires and stood for a time with my OH's parents in Gloucestershire along with the Hoarwithys, Nomadic Way etc and their own Hannoverian stallions. V nasty and v dangerous stallion by all accounts.

I was going to use him - changed my mind, despite his wonderful looks. And would think twice about buying anything by him.
 
I expect he has now mellowed but what is interesting is that POD was the horse that Monty Roberts developed the stalls loading blanket that is often seen on racehorses for.
So i expect with his name and history he was perphaps a bit of a lad at some time in his life
 
Totally irrelevant perhaps, but I always wondered if Jilly Cooper was inspired to name Ranaldini's TB racehorse after him or perhaps vice versa....
 
I met him years ago and thought he was charming, very laid back & mannerly. He was/is at Langaller & it may be that the environment suited him very well, as all the stallions were behaving like riding school horses...

i knew a stallion by him, he was one of the kindest horse you could meet!!!very genuine and through some nice foal??

I think that the environment at Langaller suits all the horses very well - and agree that they all seem very relaxed and happy.
 
One of our customers bred a foal by him a couple of years ago, and the mare has now returned to the same stallion, so I reckon that is a good recommend. I don't know the stallion personally, but I've heard a fair mix of opinions on him.
 
Have a yearling by him who has a wonderful temp, also the chap who bred him has a two year old by him also lovely. He saw POD at Llangaller and said he was happy relaxed and very fiendly.
 
I have just found this thread & felt i must comment.
Stallion temperaments are more often than not governed by the way they are handled, which is demonstrated by all the stallions at Langaller. I have visited the stud several times with my connemara mare & always go & see the other "Boys" while I am there.
As for POD, he comes across as a nice person, a lovely looking horse, typical of the old HIS type. I have known a few youngsters by him & all have exceptionally nice temperaments, so don't be afraid to use him.
