Can someone tell me how to use the private messages.

To send one click on the users name and it'll give you a drop down menu, click send "so and so" a private message.
to read yours, at the top right under your username and above the log out button there is "private messages" in red. If you click on the private messages it'll take you to your inbox. Once you're there there's also a drop down menu whilst in your inbox that allows you to go to your "sent messages"
If you want you can try a test run and message me and I'll reply so you can see it from both sides?
