How do folk come across private yards to rent? Is it completely by chance or by some stalkerish means? :D

I've heard of a yard in Delph, Saddleworth that may be up for rent but only have a name of Rob in Delph to go on. Not especially useful, I realise, but i was told this second hand as it was.

Do you just advertise for a yard to rent and hope for the best?

Sorry, no help, but just wanted to say hi ! I come from Oldham originally , dont get to go back these days. Use to love the band contest days( aka pub crawls) , and the fantastic garden centre cafe in Uppermill !

Get off my thread if you're not helping!!! :D

My first contest arrived and left in a blur of Guinness and not enough to eat :D I'm amazed how many people still turn out for that sort of village activity - hope it continues as so. I had the idea (originally from Huddersfield) that they actually walked from like Delph to Lees or wherever, playing tunes! Turns out, they all get their Band Coach! I was destroyed at their idleness!!! :D

A garden centre in Uppermill? I don't venture much off the main street - I live in Lees and stable in Denshaw. I adore the look of the hardware store though - it looks a treasure of a place!!

garden centres a bit out of uppermill - its Dobcross really on Dobcross New Road near the Brownhill Visitor Centre. They do home made cakes in the cafe and you can sit out in summer.

Yeah thats the one. Mmmm yummy cakes.

Denshaw - now i do remember working in the local hotel as a teenager, it was called La pergola. Happy days:D:D:D

My Dad still lives in Oldham, Ill ask him, as a friend of his has a yard, will see if he knows of anything.

Ive come over all nostalgic now:)

Oh, jolly good show :)

I have too young ex-racehorses - 3 & 5 yrs old and unfortunately the grass management where I am is 5h1t. Neither are shod so don't make a terrible of mess fields as they're too idle to do anything other than eat! There is not going to be any decent grass in the spring or summer as they've been out in it since April last year and it's ******ed. Both have got mud rash - one so badly she has cellulitis and the other hasn't ever had in it the 3yrs i've had him, despite standing out in mud like everybody else does in winter. Now my understanding is that there's a septic tank that drains into that field. . .

It's a shame as it's a lovely yard and I really like the people but now i know about the septic tank, I'm hesitant to stay especially as i'm keeping in 24/7 and the arena that was meant to be finished in June last year still isn't done :(

Mmmmm Newbank Garden centre cakes delicious. I'm a Saddleworth moor neighbour now I live on Rishworth moor. Learnt to ride at Judith's though (Husteads). Knocking on doors has worked for me in the past when looking for a private yard, someone always knows someone who will be able to help.

My dad used to shoe at hustead riding school. They had a fire a couple of years back didn't they :(

Coconut the donkey was fab, but tried to do a bunk if he saw my dad on the yard haha.

I'm from Saddleworth too! Trying to guess what yard you're on in Denshaw and which farrier was LL's dad!

There have been a couple of yards to rent advertised in Saddleworth, but I think they were both filled. Both were advertised on ODRC's website (www.odrc.co.uk) so may be worth keeping an eye out on there.

Mudrash is very common in Saddleworth, which is basically a bog! My two end up in a hardcore turnout for most of the winter as we have suffered terribly with it. Unless you're right on the top of the hills, with bedrock under the fields, you'll get bogs, especially this year as its so wet. Our fields have almost gone to rushes as they are so wet..

ps, new café under the viaduct in what was the Visitor Centre is really good!

I was born in chadderton but lived in failsworth moved to Lancaster.keep telling people about the miles of bridlepaths regularly use to ride from daisy nook to strinedale via hearts head pike. Beggar all round Lancaster.

Behind the Rams Head pub, overlooking Rooden Reservoir. It's only been a livery yard since about June 2011 I think. I've been there since April last year - love it, but for the fact we still don't have a school! :D

Darcydoo - at the minimum I've gone Diggle to Denshaw (2hrs-ish one way) on bridlepaths (when i moved yards so hacked over) and gotten as far as Hollingworth Lake (3hr roundtrip on a fit-ish horse) going the other direction. Unfortunately, Windy Hill is inpassable because of bogs that nobody seems to want to know about and the local "Ranger" doesn't even know whose responsibility it is

Don't know the yard, but I'm just over the hill in Delph. Actually think I've seen your posts on facebook, kind of ring a bell.

Have never done that ride over Windy Hill, always meant to. I don't think it gets used much. Some of these cross moor routes are much better in summer!

Who is the local ranger? Didn't think we'd had one for twenty years now. I think most bridleways/footpaths are maintained by the council if anyone nowadays, but the windy hill section is on an overlap Lancs/Yorks bit really, so that could be the problem.

My friend recently posted on Oldham/Rochdale Riding Club about four stables (I commented re field or barn) but i'm not into moving livery yard to livery yard. Apart from a couple of little issues with where I am, i like it. If i were going to move off i would to be to my own yard. We all would I guess - mine are in 24/7 as I daren't let them out in the field as it's just horrid so even a place with a small field is adequate!
