I have noticed that my 14 y/o gelding has his privates hanging down and out more than normal this last week ( i think! Unless i have just noticed more)! The last few days everytime i untack him after work it has been out, i thought nothing of it - then last night when i changed his rug later on - 10.30 ish it was out as i whacked it by mistake - it then disappeared!! It just made me wonder if all was ok - he is fit, healthy in every other way...

It is probably nothing but i thought i would check if anyone new any different?

when I saw your post I was hoping that you meant your horse had his privates out and not someone else! LOL

Horses will have them hanging down loosely when they need a wee or when they are in a state of deep relaxation i.e. sedated or asleep sometimes.

Horses will have them down but erect if they are in a state of ... ahem! ... shall we say excitement ... if a mare is in season for example.

Obviously if the weather is warmer they tend to hang down more than when it is colder weather, also if they are hot after a ride they tend to relax them down more.

But if it is unusual for your horse then might (only guessing) indicate an infection somewhere in the sheath.

Snowy likes to get his out when hes feeling itchy and as a greeting for when he sees me  , its usually when hes feeling relaxed or being groomed, or just generally standing bored........ we all say he likes to show it off ;)!!

G will whip his out at any given opportunity! Especially when rug changing and grooming. I think he just wants me to accidentally touch it and get grossed out...but this is the same horse who has one more than one occasion has tries to poo on someones head when picking out hind feet - what a sicko!! Lol

Big hairy has his out most of the time, seriously more often than not there it is. Think it was because he was a stallion till he was 10 so likes to remind everyone of the fact! Many a photo has been spoiled with a certain presence of something! But when it comes to cleaning time soon disappears ;)

Leo always has his out. After riding, when theres food about, just generally most of the time! My daughter is always telling him to put it away!

He will also get 'it' out on command....I touch his sheath and say 'out' and there it is!! Makes cleaning so much easier :)
