Hi guys,
My loan mare is jumping fantastic at the moment, and my instructor wants me to register her with SJAI and start doing AA Amateurs. I never registered before as I used to do mostly showing, plus I never loaned a horse before.
The owner has agreed to me registering the mare and I will pay the reg fees. Let's say I win a class on the mare, who does the prize money go to, me or the owner? The mare couldn't do much when I got her, so I've trained her up and I pay all her livery, insurance etc, so I would be pretty miffed if prize monies didn't go to me. I figure the owner can benefit whenever the mare is sold (she's worth a lot more now than when I got her I'd say).
I bet I've jinxed myself now with this question and I won't win a penny!!

it depends - usually something you decide between you.
from what you've said, seeing as you pay all the bills i would have thought it would be fair for you to have the prize money myself!

If you have her on loan and are paying all the expenses then I would expect you to keep any prize money.

I had a horse out on loan with the loaner paying all the costs, it never entered my head to have any prize money.

I have also had horses ridden for me that were on full livery with the riders, I paid for everything as the owner and therefore kept the prize money and any rosettes.

Looking at it from both sides I would say the one who pays the bills keeps the rewards.

Cool, thanks. Yeah, I pay all expenses, livery, shoes, insurance, dentist, vet etc. But who does the BSJA (or SJAI in this case) assign the money to automatically when the horse wins? Rider or owner? I'm sure there is a rule regarding this, but can't find it on the website.

if you are paying for all the horses costs and entry fee you should without a doubt be taking the prize money home. You may want to draw up a contract to say if you won 10k then a percentage would go to the owner but for normal BN/discovery/newcomers classes then the prize money is so small it covers training, diesel and entry fees normally! xxx

If they're a "true" owner and pick up all the bills then yes they get the prize money. But seeing as to all intents this is your horse bar in name as you pick up all the bills then you should get the prize money.

btw with bsja unless the owner is registered too then the horse will be both owned and ridden by you in cometitions as the bsja won't acknowledge the real owner unless they cough up to become a member too - another way of making money if you ask me!
