Hello. For my A2 coursework I have to write a piece on sponsorship's effects on sport.
I need a list of horses whose sponsors' name is incorporated into their name, the only example I can think of off of the top of my head is one of William Funnell's Cortaflex Amber Du Montois. Would anybody else be able to add to my little list please?

Have they got to be current horses?? All John whitakers horses used to be Henderson XXXX and then all changed to Everest XXXX... not sure if that helps!

Yey, thankyou thats perfect. No, they don't need to be current, I just need to demonstrate the influence of sponsorship on the sport.

in the '80s it went mad, Sanyo Olympic Video was one of Harvey Smith's. John Whitaker's were Next Milton etc when sponsored by Next. the Edgars were sponsored by Everest, Liz Edgar had Everest Forever etc.
Virtual Village is the only recent one that springs instantly to mind, and Fresh Direct sponsoring Tim Stockdale's e.g. Fresh Direct Corlato.
umm, San Patriagno sponsored a lot of top showjumpers, such as Weihawej (Franke Sloothak's)
In eventing the sponsor's name isn't incorporated into the horse's name ever as far as i can remember... but Leslie Law got away with it with Shear L'eau and Shear H20 (Shearwater Insurance). on the BE registration documents now it asks whether the horse's name has commercial connotations, i'm sure that's new, didn't use to be there.
hope that helps a little!
as for the effect on the sport - more money coming in = more professionalism, more pressure on the rider (perhaps occasionally to the detriment of the horse's welfare?), more prize money (if you are talking about event sponsorship too)
what about certain xc fences being themed to suit the sponsor's name and business - such as the big boot that used to be on Dynes Hall Advanced track (sponsored by the Hunnables, can't remember the name of their company, really lovely top boots), the Barbour Zip at Gatcombe, the Remy Martin cognac glass in the Burghley arena for years, the bone at Burghley (Pedigree Chum), i could go on and on!

Yes, I had thought about that too. The problem is the essays are synoptic. Originally I was doing it on the hockey sponsors, but they only provide things like kit, which, according to the exam board does not directly affect performance, whereas with showjumping&eventing the sponsor sponsors the horse, which is a pretty importance piece of equipment

nice sponsors pay for lovely lorries with air suspension so horses arrive less tired, lovely new saddles that fit perfectly, massage blankets etc that a lot of unsponsored riders can't afford, etc etc. is that point useful?

Surely the sponsorship of events is just as important i.e. the prize money and funding comes from a company who is promoting their products. i.e. Mitsubishi and Badminton.

Everest milton? Always known as milton..
in sj sponsorship is making it more difficult fo rthe public to follow as no easily recogniseable names like milton, ryans son etc

Malin Baryard-Johnsson's H&M Butterfly Flip, do you think she gets spending sprees at H&M - now thats my kind of sponsorship

Anky's horses are sponsored by Keltec and IPS - Keltec Salinero, IPS Painted Black....
Imke Shellekens-Bartels: Hunter Douglas Sunrise.
Edward Gal's horses used to be sponsored by Group 4 Security (G4S Lingh).

Some riders don't have their sponsors names in their horse's names but just have the names on their lorries etc and use the sponsors products. I'm thinking of Mary King who my riding club visited this week. She uses Polypads, Cliff Barnsby tack, Snuggy hoods, Badminton Horse Feeds, Marksway Horsehage etc.

Some people claim that the demise of Show Jumping in the 70's from the second most watched sport on TV, only being beaten by football was a direct result of the ridiculous names that horses started getting given to keep the sponsors happy.

The worst offenders were the Sanyo horses, the public found it really hard to get close to a horse called Sanyo Music Centre as oppossed to Mr Softee or Stroller, or even worse Sanyo Hi-Fi, Sanyo Video and Sanyo Hi-Fi Needle Technology - these are genuine horse names. - why?

Other people say that all the crumpet left the sport and it lost its sex appeal, who knows.

Dunno if it was a sponsorship one - I've always wondered - Cottage Craft Spirals.

Also, hasn't BE now banned the use of commercial prefixes directly tied to sponsorship? I am sure they have and that is why the Shearwater horses were Shear L'eau and Shear H2O. It says something about it on the horse reg form which you can download from the BE website.

Sponsors also BUY horses for riders - that has got to be a way they influence the sport?

how about the naming of events, the use of feature fences like the Goodyear Tyres at Gatcombe etc?

I remember loooooooong time ago its otto was sponsored by virtual village - virtual village its otto - i think the whole british showjumping team was?

Sposnorhip can affect performance via the actual competitions.
A whole series, national and international championships can only run with sponsorship-
The Wolrd Cup Showjumping and World Cup Dressasge would not take place without a main sponsor.
Thereby not allowing as many riders to gain international experience.

sponsership is advertising, something about tax allowences ect, in other words, a good way of getting rid of money and the tax man dosnt get to any of it.

Well, it is a allowable buisness expense, and will come from a budget for marketing, brand awareness and promtional spend,
But not all the cost would go in tax.
But one could also make a point that a sponsored rider and or horse may be under more pressure to compete and be seen to be competing regardless of the optimun schedule they may prefer to follow, to ensure sponsor's exposure. So itcould be detrimetal to overall performance if pressure is high o be seen.
