Probably a stupid question...

...but for those who are getting more into ODE and bit of BE what saddle is best for all three disciplines. For example could you ride all three events in an event saddle, including deessage or would you get marked down?

Does anyone ride in an event saddle for everyday riding? Or is it best to stick to a GP? Thanks for your patience in advance!

Well put it this way. It is easier to do the dressage in a jumping saddle than it is to do the jumping phases in a dressage saddle! Alot of people do dressage in jumping or GP saddles. Weather you go for a GP or jumping saddle is personal preference. Upto BE Novice level you get plenty of people riding in GP's, above that people tend to have specific saddles.

I ride in an event saddle for everything. There is no marking down for different saddles, ride in what is comfortable for all disciplines.

Saddle fitter said to try jump, gp and event saddles on flat and jumping, the one that was comfiest for both was best, it turned out to be the event saddle.

My friend was the same :)

I would go for a gp.

I evented in a Bates Caprilli GP in all phases, worked v well. I got a dressage saddle when I was starting to move up to novice, but it's still not compulsory.

I personally wouldn't recommend using an event/jump saddle for everyday and stressage as it won't do your flatwork position many favours.

:)

So what exactly is the difference between the jump and event saddle? So some say it's ok to ride everyday in an event saddle, some say it's not and some say it's ok to stick with gp. At least they don't mark you down for it. Ha, can you imagine jumping in a dressage saddle :)

Lol, can and have jumped in a dressage saddle, was weird but I ride long anyway :D

I don't know the exact differences apart from the cut, some other more saddley experienced type people may be able to tell you :)

Ahem; I have been known to hunt - all day - in my dressage saddle, with no ill effects. But I am not a jumpy sort of person (have also jumped in a Portuguese bullfighting saddle....), and possibly a bit odd.

I personally find GP's useless, and call them general no-purpose! They attempt to do everythig and end up doing nothing. That is just my personal opinion! If you look at Jeffries or Ideal their event saddles are essentially GP. Therfore I tend to think of an event saddle as a GP. Jumping saddles are much more forwards cut, and normally have a squared off cantle. So long as the saddle fits IMO there is no reason why you should not use it for everyday, regardless of what type of saddle it is. Ask yourself what you feel most secure in, and what suits your horse best.

I agree with Patterdale. Nothing wrong with doing dressage in a jump saddle, but if its the only saddle you ever ride in it won't do your riding any favours long term. I'd go with a gp if it has to be just one.
Incidentally, I know from personal experience its possible to jump in a dressage saddle. Desirable, no. Possible, yes. Even decent size fences.
