I no I'm being a worrier but we have had such lovely weather and now this rain! Mare has been going out 24/7 no rug today it pours down 8 degrees north west wind and I have got worried she will get cold soaking wet I bring her in dry her off best as poss. But had to put her out again unfortunately didn't have light weight rug to hand so have turned her out in a mid weight.(stil raining heavy)now I'm worried she doesn't need one. And could I cause her harm. I'm a new owner and no one at the yard to ask this eve. Silly I no. thanks

I'm sure she will be fine over night - will there be someone to take it off tomorrow morning if it is really warm? The weather is so changeable at the moment you don't know what it is doing one moment to the next!

She'll be fine, honestly. Just take it off in the morning. Welcome to the worrying world of horse ownership! To rug, or not to rug.....and watching the Met Office forecast like a hawk :-)

Haha thank you so much. I will be up there at 7 in the morning straight from work the joys of nights. Made me feel so much better! Feeling like the worst owner ever. And yes watching the forecast every hour. Much appreciated x

She'll be fine for one night. Just make sure rug comes off in the morning.

In general in the UK at this time of year a healthy adult horse shouldn't need a rug when turned out. They are designed to live outside, they won't dissolve in a little rain!

Agreed but for those of us who lay awake listening to the rain and fretting:

these are really good for summer......a fly rug with a removable waterproof liner. Just take the liner out if it's going to be hot or no rain is expected....put it back in if expecting rain. Horse stays dry but does not get hot...so long as you take it out for hot days. I find with my warmblood the liner has to come out at anything over 16 degrees or she starts to sweat. The lightweight new zealand had to come off at 12 degrees or she sweats.

The liner looks like this:

I am positive your horse will be happy tonight but take the rug off tomorrow morning.

And welcome to our fretting club;)
