Has anyone tried probiotics on there dogs and if so did it make any difference to them. My dog suffers from skin allergies and anal gland issues, a friend suggested I tried probiotics has she had heard good things about them. I don't want to spend a fortune for them not to work.

Do you know what your dog is allergic to?

Is your dog on any treatment, such as Apoquel, Cytopoint or Atopica?

I'm sure you know that in your dog's case the anal gland problem is likely to be secondary to the allergies. The skin in the anal glands becomes inflamed and the ducts swollen which prevents the glands from emptying normally.

Is your dog under the care of a vet for her allergies? What do they advise?

Edit: typo

I started my lurcher on yumove probiotics as his poos were never firm, worked very well. My 2 little terriers had been having vet visits to clear their anal glands and it was quite often, I tried them on the same and their poos are now more solid and they haven’t been to the vets to have their anal glands cleared ever since they have been on the tablets. Not cheap but worth it to me

@poppy_c Is this the same little dog? Did you manage to book her in for dental and extraction?

I've tried all sorts of alternatives, including probiotics, to try and avoid long-term medication for my young dog, who has seasonal allergies/scratches badly, I'm afraid the Cytopoint jab every few months is the only thing that does the trick. It is pricey but it's worth it to see her comfortable and the improvement happens rapidly.

Lots of dermatologists are now using probiotics and other ways of supporting the gut microbiome to support skin healing/ integrity. Moderate to severe allergies and intolerances are still likely to need medication of some form but a multi modal approach is sensible

There was an interesting study of Canine probiotics showing that many don't have the amount listed or even the correct Species per the label in the tub. Protexin Pro Soluble and Purina Fortiflora did so I stick with those
