problem gelding

my boy is 3 years old, i had him gelded as a 2 years old. so this is the first spring after his gelding and he is being a nightmare. he has been out with the same gelding seen january this week this owner took his rug of and all my boy is doing is pestering him all the time chasing him about and trying to mount him. also in the stable he has now got a mare beside him and he spends most of his time rearing and back barrell at the side she is on (american barn stables). he is still good for me to handle. so do you think he could be a rig or is it just coz he was only gelded last year.
 
sounds like a rig sorry!! My gelding is one to. i would double fence the side with the mare and see if you can turn him out on his own made a huge differance to mine good luck!
 
I think maybe he had just grown up and is more full of himself? We have a pony who we thought wasa rig for years, have always kept him with geldings and he is incredibly quick with all four of his legs. Has never tried to mount them (had him for 15 years since he was 7) but it is common for him to have a strop in the field all by himself kicking, bucking, squealing and backing up - very angry pony!

We have had him tested to see if he is a rig but he is not. He is 14.2 and is the total boss of our herd, and doesn't accept new horses easily, in fact makes the introduction process a total nightmare! To handle he is the quietest and best behaved of the lot of them and wouldn't dream of intentionally kicking anybody.

Yours could still be a rig, but its not necessarily the reason for the stroppy behaviour - what breed is he? (said pony is welsh x tb)
 
Get the vet out to check if he is a rig, if not there is a suppliment called stroppy gelding that works like stroppy mare to chill their hormones. Hope this helps

You can't rule out being a rig until you get a vet check but to me it sounds like a young gelding feeling rather pleased with life. Some geldings still react to mares so having him stabled next to a mare in a barn system may not be helping either - can you swap stables with someone?
 
Have you looked into Stroppy gelding which Dodson and Horrell do or Global Herbs do I think its Rig Calm. We've got a 17 year old who is gelded but still likes to think hes a stallion!! when the mares are in season, he paces up and down and calls and creates. Found a herbal supplement really works for him.
 
I have the same problem with my gelding who was gelded late. He is a pain with the mares and when I first got him he attacked me and bit my back (hard) whilst I was leading him away. My sister goes on another horse forum and someone on there also has this problem, and their vet recommended bromide (think I have spelt it right) for their gelding. Its something to do with the magnesium levels. And since he has been on that apparantly hes been great. The next time my vet comes up I'm going to have a word about it.
 
no i can't swap stables they are all very attached to there stables, i'm going to turn him out by night so he is not stabled by her.he was stabled next to a different mare in the winter and i had no problem. does anyone know the cost of the blood test to see if he is a rig? he is a section d.
 
He's still being naughty then, Fred was galloping up and all the lanes yesterday!! Me and anna caught him and had to wait for A to come and get him, he was acting like a 3 yr old stud LOL! Maybe they get something in their heads this time of year?

This sound exactly the same as my NF 5 yr old who was gelded late. He is now on Stroppy gelding and it seems to be helping

some young geldings are just full of themselves, it takes them a while to grow up and mature...i don't know, i'd still get him checked out
