my friend just told me today that her mare who is 5 is having hissy fits out on rides. At points she will back up, rear, spin, and will not go forward, she tenses her body so she cant feel the kicking. And today i rode her, and she was going really well in the field doing flatwork, until i went into canter on the left rein and she got fast and when i pulled back on the reins she shot up on all fours, bucked and reared. I kept on schooling after that and she was good, but it seems like she has no manners. Does anyone have any ideas?she is losing her confidence rapidly....thanks guysx

if it consistently on the left rain then it could be associated pain - i'd get an equine massage person out to look at her muscles

what is she like on the two reins on the lunge - is the left rein worse than the right ?

as it appears on one rein and seems a bit spasmodic that she can be going so well personally I'd check teeth, head x ray possibly and also get good muscles person out!

she doesnt just do it on one rein but both, it is mainly because she doesnt like being held back because as soon as you hold her back you can feel her tensing

I had the same problems and had teeth, back everything checked, now riding in a dr. cooks bitless bridle and have not had any problems since. might not work for every horse but worth a try if pain is ruled out.

Was having a conversation with someone on Saturday about their youngster that had started to rodeo etc. Everything had been checked, feed, teeth, back, saddle etc. The youngster was being written off as a loon, except now they believe it is muscle related.
