Anyone having a problem with their horse out in this rain?! My pony's loving it but my arab is miserable, stroppy and shaking. I've had to have them out solid for 10 days due to building work at our yard, hopefully the work will be finished soon!!!

I gave up and stuck a lightweight turnout on mine! She was standing by the gate shivering until then...thankfully, the weather has since dried up here:)

Hi my first post :)

Got a lightweight turnout on mine, there is not any shelter in the field and he really suffers after a while. Will take it off in the morning, it's supposed to be better weather.

Mine hates rain and so far this summer is well grumpy :(

He has had very few nights out without a rug and is in during the day, even found a tiny bit of mud fever on his white socks this week

She's a fair weather girl, hates rain and the cold! Our fields are water logged as well so keeping an eye out for mud fever. Thankfully it's warm with this rain like said but she's still rugged, sad for this time of the year.

My 14.3 arab has been fine the whole summer without any rugs despite the appaling weather, but the 15.1 has needed a lightweight on now and then as she shivers after a thorough drenching, they can stand in the field shelter and under the trees, so its not too bad ...... but it does depend on the type of horse and your particular environment .

Mine are in medium weights, and were sulking under there tree yesterday. However, they loath being stabled, and are out all winter too.

I think a lot of Arabs struggle with rain, no matter how tough they are when it's just plain cold (but dry)! Mine will go out without a rug when there's snow on the ground but if it is continuous rain she hates it! I'll admit I left her out without a rug on last night even though it was throwing it down - she came charging to the gate when she saw me and was shivering and shaking in her stable, but she cheered up a bit when I fed her and I decided to throw her back out because she was too wet to put a rug on and I didn't want to leave her in overnight (it was about 7pm). Luckily it was dry when I woke up this morning so I didn't feel too guilty!
Usually what I do is bring her in during the day so she can dry off, as even in a rug she gets cold and hates staying out in continuous rain. She is such a princess!

Lol its almost like i posted that, my 14.3 Arab is fine but our 15.1 is a total wuss & has been rugged.

Its all to do with body weight really.... the 15.1 is a bit of a skinny-minny and the 14.3 a little too well covered.... a very good do'er!
I hate rugging in the summer.... it just isnt right... something very strange going on with our climate

I always used to have to blanket mine in the summer. Leave him out in the rain and he'd be tucked up, dropping weight before my eyes and downright miserable. It never seemed quite the thing but there you go.

Horses for courses, if they are miserable, cold etc, it is so simple to sling a blanket on and make them more comfortable. Disregard what any person, book, or anything else says, if it works for your horse then it is right.

:)

yes, they say the gulf stream has moved down, hence we are getting colder wetter summers now

Mine has been wearing his lw turnout most nights! He comes in during day anyway.
He's most unamused by the weather though!!

Mine hate it.

All are in at night (two purebreds, one part bred) and out in lightweights during the day. Partbred is fine, but purebreds (mum and daughter) are struggling a bit. Yearling was freezing when I brought her in tonight, bless her, and mare has dropped weight, although, in fairness, she needed to.

Enough is enough now though, just glad I have stables!
