I have recently acquired another Greyhound taking me up to having 5 :)

Now my new Grey (Elliot) wags his tail that much he has burst the bottom of his tail (blood everywhere) & is causing sores along the tail by trying to lick it.

I am cleaning it twice a day with weak Hibiscrub, putting on Intrasite & then wrapping it up with cotton wool roll & vetrap. I am having to muzzle him as he is nibbling the bandage off to stop him doing this.

Am i doing ok or should i be doing something else ??

I've never had a Greyhound with this before & i've had them all my life.

Any suggestions or helpful info appreciated.

There is a spray called Cothivet, absolutely stinks (my Dog hides if he thinks his tail is getting sprayed :() but heals it up really well. Plus it stinks and tastes so foul they don't tend to lick it.
Not sure if it is prescription only, or whether you can buy it online. We get it from the Vet.

We had a setter who quite regularly used to split her tail. I think we used to bandage a little plastic guard onto the end of it to allow it to heal. We would then take it off....until the next time.

This is very common in greys, as suggested at work we use syringe cases to lace over the tip of the tail as a cover and then bandage in place, so the casing whips off everything instead of tail till it heals, but in most cases the tip is amputated to let it heal better otherwise it just bursts open all the time, I had a puppy whippy a x's tail tip amputated b4 rehoming him recently cos it was easier than trying to keep the little begger from busting it open all the time.

I used a 20 ml syringe case for my lurcher when she had this problem - worked a treat!
