Hi all
As you all probably know im pretty new to owning a pony, but recently my boy has decided he hates to be groomed.
If i go anywhere near him with any piece of grooming equipment he refuses to keep still along with digging at the floor and heavy breathing.
Has anyone else had this problem...should i be worried??
Thanks

Hi,

Are you grooming him in the stable? is it in the same place every time? is he doing this with all types of brushes or is there one he doesnt like?

Tie him up so he knows you mean business and he understands that he IS going to be groomed. As long as you're kind but firm and business-like, ie if he snorts, don't back off and say "oh what's the matter mummy's ickle goo-goo babe?"* but just tell him not to be a prune and carry on. He'll probably let you know whether he prefers stiff scratchy hard grooming or soft gentle soothing stuff. I'm assuming he's not got any medical reasons that would make grooming unpleasant.

* just kidding hun - you know what I mean xxx

Is he aggressive- Does he go to nip you or anything when you are grooming him? Definately tie him up and just carry on safely and slowly if he starts being a pest. He needs to learn even if he starts pawing the ground or moving around its not going to make you stop. Try not to rush and get it over with as quickly as poss because he is being awkward. As you have mentioned he is your new pony I am guessing he has recently been vetted? Not sure how long you've had him but i'm sure things will improve. When I first got my cob he would never let me pick his hooves out...it was just like he'd drilled his legs into the floor!!! Now he lifts the first one up as soon as he sees me pick up the hoof pick. get someone else on your yard to observe you - maybe this will highlight something. Let us know how you are getting on.

Thanks all for your replys i had him vetted and he was fine the only thing was that when the vet pressed his stomach and sides he jumped put his ears back and tried to get the vet, so the vet carried on and told us its not pain he is feeling, she thinks his had something bad done to him in the past and hes expecting pain. So i guess its going to be alot of time and hard work to get him to trust us.
I did tie him up and he was digging the floor and swinging his back end side to side running away from me :-(
Ill keep you updated :-)
