Problems with haylage

we are in swest scotland and as usual haylage delivered weekly big round bales which has been made locally. we use one or 2 per week and thus far has been best quality yet (have used same supplier several yrs).

i did worry last autumn that it would be poor, scarce or expensive but so far so good!! we pay £25 per round bale and expect price to stay same all season.

friend takes round bales hay from same supplier at one a month and has just had her new bale which she says is great.

i did attempt to purchase a stock of haylage early on in order we kept getting exactley same field, cut etc but supplier said no need and again so far every bale has been identical.

we keep fingers crossed for rest of winter and feel sorry for those who are paying huge prices and cannot source a decent supply.

NorthWest, haylage supplied by the yard from their own fields.
Quality is fab, mine is on the 2nd cut as the 1st cut is just too good for her.

JodesFG: I'm sorry, I reserved mine - the supplier is running out already and is not supplying new customers at the moment. Good luck, and sorry I can't help. I've seen locally made small bale haylage but that's over £7 for what looks like not much more than Horsehage size.
Sparrow

had a very good supplier until jan, then he ran out, decent size small bales @ £5.50 a bale nice quality, at the moment i am buy no soak ryegrass at £6.25 for small bales, nice quality but expensive as small bales.

Warwickshire...was using small bale until middle of last summer then quality dropped badly. Tried one bale of this season's from same supplier, still rubbish. now on Horseage as can more reliable if more expensive!

I'm in cumbria and haven't had too many problems getting haylage. I have two suppliers (one I have used before and one new supplier) however, the haylage from the supplier I have used before has dropped in quality from excellent last year to v. wet smelly stuff, so am using stuff from new supplier. like sparrow I have reserved my stuff. £25 for huge round bale and £22 for big oblong bale or £5.00 for small square bale but as I am feeding 8 horses these bales just aren't economical.

supply problems have been blown out of all proportion I still see ads for hay/haylage for sale in my area. although I must admit HAY is harder to get hold of and has gone up in price.

i couldnt agree more that supply and cost problems have been exaggerated. it only takes talk of a shortage and panic soon spreads. by very nature of haylage quality can be unpredictable although in recent years i feel those who make the haylage have got better at it and haylage improved.

Slightly off the topic but..

Am I the only person that uses hay instead of haylage? Just wondering why haylage is so popular? (this is probably me being dumb lol!) I've never used it because we always make our own hay.
