I was recommended to take all his shoes off and allow his hoof to grow

I did think of doing this as don't really hack that often so he is mainly ridden on soft ground. Will be one of my options when I talk the farrier, thanks!

It's a common misconception that barefoot horses can't be worked over all sorts of terrain. Obviously, it will take time for all the damage to grow out first! Depending on the extent of the damage and how much he can be ridden, your farrier may actually recommend some road work to stimulate his hooves.
My pony had a crack nearly that long when he arrived, due to stress from exceedingly long toes. It was quite wide, too. My trimmer bevelled the bottom eges of the crack to prevent further pressure, and it grew out completely in about 8 months.
I'll take issue with he shavings - she'll need soemthing to pee on, but plain mats are better
I always think shavings dry the feet out too much if they are in prolonged contact - that can be as bad as keeping them too wet. Feet need the dew moisture from the grass to be really healthy.
One of my horses had a hairline crack very similar to this initially right down the centre of one front hoof which later happened exactly the same on the other. She was sound but the crack developed from coming upwards from the bottom for a few inches to in time reaching the coronet band. My old farrier used to say not to worry about it and it was poor foot conformation (she was 9 at the time and had never had it previously) but when I changed farrier he said it had been caused by poor shoeing. He felt the toe had previously been left too long at the crack had been caused by pressure on the toe. My new farrier keeps the toes shorter and shoes with quarter clips and the cracks are slowly growing out. I don't feed any hoof supplements as the horn quality itself is good, but I am careful about too much fast road work.
Forgot to say, I also regularly use Keratex Hoof Disinfectant which is purely a disinfectant to keep the hooves, sole and frogs clean and prevent bacteria etc spreading. It is NOT a hoof oil, hoof hardener etc which IMO can make things worse rather than better
