Has anyone else had problems with this product? I saw a thread on here a couple of days ago but cannot find it. I used it on my elderly pony just under his belly and the next morning he was covered in large hives!!! I think it contains Deet but ive never had any problems before with any products. I am going to email Naf with the pictures as they were quite large lumps.

Never had a reaction problem with Naf but if you horses has a sensitive skin, try an old East African insect repellant - 3 parts baby oil mixed with 1 part Dettol. Wipe it on with a damp sponge - insects hate it.

Naf Off is really strong. Effective - but very strong. And yes - I think it does have DEET in it. Personally we don't use Naf Off - largely because my daughter does much of the care and I don't want to expose a child to the chemicals in that sort of fly repellant. But we do use NAF citronella - both gel and spray. It is more natural and safer for my daughter. It doesn't last as long - but it does smell nice.

But we are lucky in that we don't have bad flies where we are. If you have something more voracious you might need something stronger than citronella. NetTex do a 72 hour fly repellant we use at PC camp where the flies etc are simply enormous and bite anything from 2 legs to 4. You could try that.

Obviously your pony is allergic to one of the ingredients...it's hardly NAF's fault. Did you do a patch test in a small area before covering his belly in it?

Hope your baby feels better soon:). Chalk it up to experience, sell what you've got and try some of the flyspray recipes stickied in stable yard? Bloody sods can be such a worry sometimes can't they:rolleyes: ......

They've changed the ingredients in their fly spray so wouldnt mind betting they've done the gel too. My friend rang them up and asked tem what they'd changed as one of her horses has severe allergies. They assured her they'd only added Tea tree and it wasn't until she'd tried it on her other horse (before trying it on her allergy prone one) and he came out in hives that they admitted they'd put some other chemical it as well. I'd ring them up and find out because this is obviously a pretty widespread problem... Thank god she didn't use it on her sensitive boy as he'd probably be dead!!

We put the bad feet spray on our tb and within minutes he can up in lumps and started scratching at his skin.....quick wash off with diluted hipi scrub and cold water and he settled.
