I have just had a lightweight stable rug delivered that I bought off ebay, the ad clearly said it needed a clean so I was expecting it to be mucky and smelly which it certainly is!

Is it worth getting it cleaned professionally? those of you who wash your own rugs and have had them professionally cleaned is there a big difference in results?

Its a small rug so would fit in my washing machine if necessary

I've had my mare over a year now and havn't professionally washed a rug. We do it in our own washing machine. We bought some reproofing stuff but havnt used it yet but its a lot cheaper than getting it washed professionally:)

Have done both but professionally is so expensive that i tend to only do it if something needs repairing. Our local launderette has a machine specifically for horse rugs. Its quite big so can get 2 - 3 small rugs/lightweights in

Yup, as long as you are using someone who really is a professional rug cleaner who has the right industrial equipment for the job then it's worth it.

I have rugs that have never leaked that are 10 years old and have been professionally cleaned and reproofed that come back each time looking as good as new from the cleaners.

In my opinion if you use the more expensive brands of rugs then it is worth every penny.

If its small enough to fit in your washing machine and you dont mind the horse dirt/grit/mud/hayseeds going thru your machine then yes wash it yourself. The good thing with prof washing is that they use large machines so it washes them alot better as they are able to slosh around in the machine more openly so its not all scrunched up and they dont spin them at a high long spin ( which damages your rug eventually ) .

Ditto this!

I stick to Rambo rugs now and have each one professionally cleaned and reproofed at the end of the Winter, and it's well worth it, IMO. They are too large to fit in my own machine and come back looking as good as new. I've NEVER had one leak and my horses live out 24/7.

Professional cleaning, if done properly is well worth the money. I sometimes wash lighter rugs at home but still use the professionals for a proper clean.

If its a LW stable rug then I would wash it off with a hosepipe first to get most of the "muck" off, then stick it through my own machine - no more than 40 degrees - and after one wash would take it out, turn it the other way round and wash it again - and hey presto, a reasonably clean, less smelly rug. If its still soapy, then just put it through a short cold wash without any detergent. Hang it over a gate in the sun (if we get some) to dry. Done it loads of times, and saved loads of money.

Word of warning though - don't put your underwear through on the next wash, it gets a bit itchy!

I have my rugs washed twice a year professionally, summer rugs get cleaned October winter Rugs in march. Well worth the money in my opinion!!! They come back lookin like brand new rugs and some of them are 8 years old!!!

Hi, I wash all my own rugs and I do my stable rugs every month in winter can't stand dirty rugs. Best thing to do is plastic dust bin fill with hot water and washing powder add rug leave for a bit then if really bad use pressure washer or rinse off the rugs and hang on gate. If the rug fits my machine after its been on the gate a bit I then put it in the machine with no soap powder. Pick a good windy day, With modern light weight rugs You can have them back on the horses back same dayU

I have a lady who cleans my rugs and is not that expensive. I got 8 rugs done and repaired this year for about £100. I thought that was alright and they look so pretty.....
6 outdoor and 2 stable.

I wash fleeces & lightweight rugs myself (after vigorously brushing off as much hair as possible) but nothing heavier - I'd rather pay a fee for having rugs washed & dried somewhere else than have all the hard work & then have to pay for a new washing machine too :p
