I an just watching the coverage from Olympia today (bbc this afternoon) and there were quite a few riders behind Claire and Tim that didn't have hats on in the warmup ring, and one woman who took hers off after the round
I was just wondering your opinions on professionals riding their horses without hats

*Groan* Do we have to? We have this at least twice a year!

No offence intended OP and of course everyone should think about it and debate it. Just not me as I can't bear to rake it over again! Enjoy your thread :)

Aaaaaaaaaagggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. FFS get a life!!!! You mealy mouthed, no doubt jobsworth woman.

Crikey, what a reaction, unless I am missing something.

I hate it when anyone doesn't wear a hat, it is not a good example to set but I am also torn because it is riders choice and we all have the right to choose. It does irritate but doesn't incense me :)

My opinion would be....... up to them what they do in their own homes, but whilst on TV and Olympia I think it should be compulsory to wear them so they are promoting health and safety especially when lots of little kids watching.

doesn't bother we at all people not wearing hats on their own premises etc, it's their own choice X

Well it doesnt irritate me, but these sort of post certainly do. I would have thought that these professional riders can do their own self assement of whether they can and cannot take their frigging hats off.

I wouldn't have thought it warranted being offensive and how a post can irritate you more than professionals setting a bad example to children I don't know. Maybe do what I do and don't read or respond to posts that irritate you instead of being rude to people.

The Dublin horseshow has changed its rules this year to forbid professional riders and their grooms from riding without hats in the warm ups. Dare say it will be long before every international show has this rule. Have no real problem with riders choosing not to wear one but I guess it would be better not to allow it at such public events.

Well Jeremy Clarkson drives the cars on Top Gear at MUCH higher speeds than the legal limit......but nobody says that's setting a bad example.

On a personal note, yes I would like to see riders wearing hats at all televised events, but my personal opinion counts for F all - that's life.

You would think Tim Stockdale standing there in a neckbrace after falling off a horse (with a hat on!) would make them think twice, but clearly not.

Nice reply merry crisis !!!! Slight over reaction.

Yes this has been done over and over, but as it is a public forum, then many new people join and have never seen these posts!!!

My reaction though is that that it is their head, so they can break it!!!

Merry Crisis - you're out of order and very rude!

I posted this very same thing in CR on thursday after going to Olympia on wednesday. We happened to watch some show jumpers practicing and although they did wear hats whilst jumping, most didn't while on the flat.

Yes I agree it's your head and therefore your decision to wear a hat but if you are being looked up to by impressionable youngsters then I feel you should set an example. Horses are great levellers after all!

They are bringing in a new rule next year regarding wearing hats at shows, think it's being made compulsary xx

I am sorry if I have upset some posters.. I was just wondering the views of other horsey people :( I have not seen another post about this.. Must have missed them

Don't worry :) You post away about whatever you like. Some people will join in, some will look and go away without posting, some won't even open if they don't like the title - and some will be incredibly rude, unfortunately!

FWIW, we were commenting that the SJers out of all the professionals spend more on their headwear than any others, and yet they have a new habit of leaving the ring, taking their hats off and handing them to their waiting grooms!:D In my day we took the horse, not the hat ;)

Well given that from 2013 it will be compulsory to wear hats while at all FEI shows this dead horse only has limited time in which to get flogged! And for whomever said they wear them jumping but not on flat....rules state they have to be worn jumping. I personally always wear one and can't abide it when people don't but their head, their choice, their families live with the repercussions!

I personally don't like the idea of riding without a hat but I do respect that it's up to the individual - their head, their choice to risk it. But I don't think anyone should be allowed to ride without a hat at a show like that with so much publicity. But that's just my view :) I'll be glad when this law comes in.. Although it won't effect me personally I suppose.
