Sit down, pull up a chair and I'll put the kettle on, this could be long.
About two months ago my horse caught himself on the fence wire (it's the type with nylon rope with fine electrical wire through it) and cut his hind leg on the front of his hock. He was taken to veterinary hospital where they made the decision not to stitch, but to treat with heavy bandaging as they were wary of sealing in infection. He was discharged after a week and the local vet came out twice a week to redress the wound. This was not successful, the wound kept getting bigger. I asked the vet about hydrotherapy after recommendation by a friend but he said it was not appropriate at this point. After a further two weeks, the wound was horrendous and it was obvious the vet did not know what to do, the only solution he and the hospital vet could think of was to bandage my horse even thicker to prevent any movement and perhaps change less often. By this stage we were over £3K on vet fees! Thank God for insurance. At this point I put my foot down and said I wanted a referral for hydrotherapy and they finally agreed, I think just to shut me up! Thank heavens I did, the results have been amazing and I just wish I'd forced the issue sooner.
The local vet is now very impressed with the results and admits he had no experience of the treatment which is why he hadn't considered it sooner.
So I would just say to anyone who is having problems with a wound, try hydrotherapy, the results are amazing. My boy is now ready to come home with no dressings, ok, we're still a way off but the wound is stable and hopefully he can go out in a small paddock as long as we can keep the flies off. I'd don't know where we would be if I hadn't forced the issue
Sorry if the photos are massive, I'm on my iPad and don't know how to resize. Thanks for reading.
