Progressive riding tests 1-6 equates to stage 1?

I was about to take my stage one when my yard said not to bother and to do my progressive riding tests 1-6 (is this NVQ level 1?) ... if i passed this, does this equate to having bhs stage one? Then could i go straight onto stage 2?

I'm confused!!

The BHS progressive riding tests are not NVQ. They are equivalent to BHS Stage 1 (provided that your yard are still approved to do them and don't just have test sheets lying around from years ago as a yard near me does!!). If you take the progressive riding tests you will still need to take your Riding and Road Safety test before you are able to take your Stage 2 riding.

Do weigh up the different routes. The progressive riding test are good and they offer smaller chunks and can outwardly appear cheaper. However, if your yard charges you £25 for each level - that is £150, more than the exam. Plus going to do the exam gives you the experience of the exam situation. The examiners are very aware that Stage 1 is the first time you will be in that situation and try to put you at ease. In Stage 2 they are by no means bad but they assume people have experience of the situation. Remember that the exam is now modular and you can pass and bank sections if needed.
