I apologize for all my posts but trying to sort my horsey life out and you guys are so helpful!! Also for lack of horsey adult friends to talk this over, I always appreciate HH Members :)

After much thought I'm now thinking maybe the BHS Stage 1 might'n be the best fit. I've been looking into the progressive riding tests and like the idea of them much more.

After reading some BHS exam experiences I have been put right off, as my anxiety makes my words jumble up so the thought of an examiner questioning me in front of all those people is not something I can handle!(not yet anyway)
If the care part was 100% written I'd have no issue but speaking wise, my words always end up getting mixed up.

Has anyone done the progressive riding tests 1-6? How did you find them?
Also has anyone ever done them privately? eg finding a BHSAI Instructor and getting lessons with them & they examining you? That seems 100% better for me personally but I'm not sure its even allowed. Does anyone know if it has to be done in a group or could I do it all through private lessons?

There is nowhere in Northern Ireland that does a Progressive test course, my old riding school used to run the odd session but they focused mainly on younger riders so found the pony club tests were run instead.

Thanks in advance guys:)

My daughter did the BHS Progressives rather than her stage 1. If memory serves it was just because we could do it when it suited us rather than have a set exam day - also she was very young. She completed the series within days of her 14th birthday which was the youngest you could do it. (She did her stage 2 on her 16th birthday for the same reason..)

You do have to use an approved center but we did it one to one over 3 "lessons". If you have the time to travel to the mainland and just stay a couple of nights you could probably complete the whole thing quite quickly. The center we did it with was in Berkshire. PM me if you want details.

I've tried searching google for places but it seems all can only offer a 10 week part time course. I would prefer to find a place here to work through lessons gradually rather than having 3 days to do it especially on strange horses & place but I will look into it. Thank you Shay

I'm 99% sure you can't do them outside of an approved centre, unless through British Riding Cubs. The other issue is that tests 5 and 6 have to be assessed by an II, not an AI.

Re answering questions, you're going to have to do that whether in your Stage 1 or in the progressive tests for the horse care side. You can't/wont be tested on parts of the horse during a riding lesson. All six together equal Stage 1 and there's no way you can do some of the stable management side without being asked questions in a group situation sadly.

I was hoping to find a BHSII teacher who would be willing to offer the progressive tests/training privately and ultimately do the tests 1-2-1.

(I'm not sure if this is possible but trying to find out) there are a few registered BHSII teachers in NI so I was going to approach them and ask. Also I think I'd be ok in a group situation if I knew the people, it's just the thought of being interogated by an examiner and questioned further when I mix up my words eek. I just wish over here they offered the 10 week courses that England has to offer.

You need to email the BHS and find out whether anyone has the power/authority to test you one on one outside of an approved centre.
