Project horses

Probably most of the horses I've had over the past 15 years have been so- called projects. I've only had Iberians or Friesians in that time, and a lot of people don't know how to deal with them meaning that there's actually nothing wrong with the horses. Upset, misunderstood Spanish horses are rife.

Out of curiosity, what’s different about Spanish horses that means they often end up misunderstood?

Ha ha: how long have you got? Speak to anyone who's ever had one and they'll tell you. Very sensitive, quick, willing, emocional horses that will try their hardest to please, and if they don't understand what the rider is asking for they tend to get very upset indeed. This often results in frightened riders, inappropriate training and unhappy horses - sometimes dangerous. Their conformation and way of going is also somewhat different to the "normal" horse found in this part of the world, so hoof care, saddle fitting, bitting and feeding is often not suited to their needs.

There are of course exceptions, but I've lost count of the number of "problem" Iberian horses I've ended up with that weren't in the least a problem (the majority of which were from the UK).

Here's a new one for you ( on my FB feed today).

very sad sale, my heart bleeds.
[...] is a Registered imported Spanish mare
Selling due to lack of time and rider skills.
Destiny needs an owner who will work with her to mount her. She's skittish but doesn't do anything dangerous. It is easy to control, but a novice rider will not cope with it.
[...] is full of energy, she doesn't feel her age.
She requires work on her behavior ..
She's really unique but unfortunately I can't handle it.

Yep, yet another one. I've had dozens from the same situation, poor things.

I’ve seen quite a few similar ads for Iberian horses and they are all priced much the same whereas a different breed folk would be asking £900 for. Is that a realistic price for these horses? Or wishful thinking because of the breed?
