i have a green pony, He has lots of potential jumping and things are starting to come together, he’s getting the hand of more technical (but of course still fairly small) courses, flat work is coming on etc.

He’s my first “project” so it’s a learning curve for us both and honestly I just want to learn as much as possible.

As expected, I am still needing to come back to trot etc between fences to balance him and I was wondering how long it usually takes to get to the point where “all comes together”? In that you’re able to start tackling courses at a consistent pace? Any exercise ideas to get to that stage would be greatly appreciated too.

Ofc I’m in no rush with him whatsoever I am just interested and super eager to hear/learn any tips and tricks for green ponies:) thanks!

I think to a certain extent it just depends on the natural talent of the pony. Both ponies I have started seemed to have this where as the horse did not at all! For instance when my young step daughter took the coloured mare round her first PC XC course I remember saying, don't worry about any timings, just have a trot round and giver her time to see whats ahead, only to see them happily cantering along jumping every thing! They may have the odd idiosyncrasy, for instance the coloured pony happily jumped up onto banks and tables but had to have a special lesson about jumping into or out of water. Just keep their confidence up, don't over face or over tire.
