I have a very lively 20 plus gelding. He has always liked to have a pee in a certain place when out on exercise, but of late he has taken to having a pee before we hack out. If he misses this he seems to become a touch unsettled when out on exercise, and sometimes he seems to be reluctant to canter but breaking into a jolting trot. Upon arriving home he now sometimes seems to let it all "Hang out" I have started to watch his shadow when riding and he does tend to show himself. Has anybody experienced this, and is there a solution to this, or is it a case of everything going south???? He really is a lively old boy, game for anything.

I hope you get an answer. I've been thinking about posting on something similar. An old boy who has taken to pee'ing more than normal ( - everytime I arrive at the yard, catch in, put back in his box after mucking out etc etc etc), and is constantly 'hanging out' despite the cold weather

Hi florin. Sunny (22) used to insist on stopping at exactly the same spot on our fave 2hr hack for a pee too. Unfortunately it was right alongside a cemetery and I'm sure passers by used to think I was mad or weird or both! He's not so bothered on shorter hacks. I think they just get set in a routine and derive reassurance from it so I always used to let Sunny have his pee and on we went.

A prolapse is something very different eg a prolapsed uterus is where the womb turns inside out and hangs out of the back of the mare. There's not as much to prolapse with a gelding - I guess it would be a hernia. I can't begin to imagine the bladder being able to squeeze ... no...can't happen! What may be happening is that he has a mild water or sheath infection or a degree of weakness in the bladder sphincter. I'd get the vet to have a look under mild sedation so he happily lobs his old boy out (horse, not vet!) just in case it's something more sinister that is impeding the flow of urine x
