Prolite girth issues

Had new saddle fitted. Was advised by saddle fitter to buy a prolite std fit for my wide back, very short coupled little horse. I’ve previously used a wintec girth. And I hack for nearly two hours a day. Never ever had an issue. So paid nearly 100 pounds for the prolite it seemed a bit bulky. But went with the recommendation. After two rides …. awful rubbing. So I can’t use it. Saddle fitter suggested a cover. But surely it shouldn’t rub in the first place.

I had rubbing issues with Prolites, my boy found the edges very hard. I think he's pretty sensitive as we didn't get on with the Stubben string girth so many swear by too. I now use Shires anti-chaffe anatomical girth & had no issues.

I think it can be so individual what suits what horse.

I got rid of the Prolite, very humpy horse with it. I used to wash it by soaking it in the bath at home and the amount of filth that washed out was incredible, it also held water like a sponge. I now use a quite thin leather atherstone with twin elastic ends.

My mare HATED the Prolite my saddle fitter suggested I borrowed (with the plan to buy it)

Used it twice and gave it back, there is a LOT of second hand for sale which speaks volumes.

If it's not fit for purpose you can return it as long as you have your purchase receipt. If you gen up on consumer law first, you can then stand your ground when you return it.
I do have the receipt. From the tack shop. But I know he will say that the girth isn’t faulty or broken and just because it rubbed my horse, that’s not his problem. Plus …I’m scared. 😟

My very well respected saddler hates prolites.

I hope that description would cover me, I don't like them at all but if a horse is already in one and happy then we'll try it with any new saddle. Lots better options out there IMO but of course there's this...https://stephaniebloomsaddlefitter.co.uk/blog-and-resources/why-cant-saddle-fitters-agree

I can't see you can say it's fit for purpose, you'd have needed to have been offered advice/a guarantee that it would fit your particular horse by the vendor to even think about it. It's a girth that "works" on many horses.

Why did the fitter recommend it? Did you try your own girth with the saddle on the day?

I disagree with your assessment of what fitness for purpose means. If you went to a shop, bought a saddle, and rode in it without having it fitted, and then wanted your money back because it rubbed your horse, would you expect to claim from a tack shop?

I think that's customer goodwill rather than a legal right to return. I'm not speaking from direct experience over anything similar, but it's my understanding of retail law. BETA would be able to advise more if anyone wants specialist advice, and they can mediate if the retailer is a member.

Bleeding on the first ride is extreme and perhaps there was a fault with the girth?

If you have the receipt see if you can get a refund from the shop. Just say it pinches your horse therefore doesn't fit if you are within legal return date from purchase.

This! Except that mine's a gelding. Unfortunately I already bought the Prolite. The girth became increasingly harder and stiffer, horse hated it. One day bucked when I (gently) did the girth up, never done that before, so I binned it.

I bought the LeMieux Gel-Tek, it's the same shape and so, so, SO soft.

Yes. Apparently she has a deep girth grove. And I was advised to get the prolite. Rushed to tack shop. But it’s rubbed really badly after two rides.

I really like my prolite girth, makes a huge difference to the (fitted!) saddle running forward on a short coupled horse without a lot of wither- it would rub without a sleeve though, I just ram a regular lamb skin over it and it works a treat. Knowing they have a bit of a propensity to rub though I wouldn’t use it on a horse who’s saddle didn’t generally move forward.

I had the exact same with my ex racer when I got him a prolite. I switched to the le Mieux gel tek which is much softer material and has been fine, although it is still quite bulky. He is very deep in the girth and I think would suit something
More suitable for crescent shaped but the only ones I’ve found is the mattes but hate having to use sheepskin material if I can help it. Still on the look out for the ideal girth but the le Mieux one is much much better
