I have a new mare, 14.3hh chunky coloured cob but not overly porky age 17 and with a dipped back. My saddle is a thorowgood T8 with extra wide gullet however I feel it could fit better and until my saddler can get out does anyone have suggestions as to making it sit better . As she is so flat across the withers it is a bit slippy and whilst this is a temporary measure we need to be comfortable and safe. any suggestions or ideas?

Could you ride bareback? Did this with the new mare until we got a proper saddle fit, as she had quite bad muscle wastage from an ill-fitting saddle. But then I'm a bit paranoid about saddle damage. Prolites are good, have used one with a super sensitive TB while she muscled up. Not sure they would help with flat withers though?

beware - i was advised to get prolite pad by one saddler, made my horse really tight in the shoulder only time i rode in it. had another saddler out who adjusted it. Now have prolite pad that has been used once! at a cost of £49. Ho hum.

thanks Nudibranch, if i were to go bareback i would be selling tickets!!! it would be better than a comedy show ! lol but i do take your point, there seems to be mixed opinions on prolites, my daughter swears by them but others have said stay clear. Shes a lovely old lady and just want her to be comfortable until the saddlers out which is another few weeks and with this heat she needs all the help she can get.

I use a prolite, but its on my high withered TB, on the advice of my saddler, he is totally happy in it, and having shims I can swap & change makes it so much better as he changes shape. Personally though I would want a saddler to look at anything like that before I did any work with them
