Prolonged Lameness, insurance??

My horse has been lame since christmas, i have had him out of work and resting since then but there has been no improvements. I am going to see if the vets can fit him in to go into the surgery and have lameness tests ran. But do i need to contact my insurance first?

i have never claimed on my insurance, any suggestions?

I would call them and explain, they need to send you a claim form anyway.

i can download a claim form, but do you have to ring them before hand and ask will they cover it?

I would ring first although it is unlikely you will get a definite commitment to pay (this is quite normal these days).

Even if your vet fees don't exceed your excess you will probably find in the small print of your policy that you have to let your insurers know whenever the vet sees your horse.

I made a claim recently as my horse needed surgery and my insurance company, who have insured him since I bought him 6 years ago, requested a complete report from my vets for every time they saw him including routine vaccinations.

Yes call them and normally they will liase with vets RE history, when lameness started and what treatments. It will cover treatment for the injury for a year but they will need conformation from when the lameness started. Also if you have a limit around 5k for vets bills i would be careful what you claim for because if they need to scan and x-ray it can eat away at your limit very quickly!
