I recently had my horse pts due to shattering leg in field. I had had her 13yrs (5yrs on loan 8yrs owned). I am trying to sort out the insurance side of things unsure if they will pay out on death of horse (not that anything could have been done.) However i do not have a recipt of purches when talking to insurance company they have said to write a letter to them explaining this and that they would still need prove ownership and that maybe i could provide photos????
I surley cant be the only in this situation (i know very few people that have proof of recipt, i dont for the other horse either). any suggestions as to what to put in letter? or ways of proving ownership?

a passport or poss letter from vet , yard owner, farrier confirming since they have seen or known you'r horse they have known you as the legal owner!

who are you with?

xx

I am so sorry to hear about your horse

Insurance should except if no Purchase reciept

Two letters can either be from vet, farrier or yard owner confirming they know you as the legal owner

or a full copy of passport if its registered in your name or a vaccination card>

Passport is not proof of ownership, Nobbster (although that reminds me, I haven't sent Chloe's off, yet!). Vet or farrier letter, plus photos should do the trick. Saying that, who's to say that you didn't get a receipt and misplace it? Nudge nudge, wink wink. Let's face it, it's just a bit of paper signed by two people! I've got one for my new girlie (real, not forged!!), but anyone could have signed those bits of paper!

Or, would her previous owner be willing to testify that she sold her to you?

Sorry to hear that she was pts. Hope you get the insurance sorted.

actually i work in insurance!!!

Well I'm note sure I've kept a receipt for a horse I'd owned for 8 years. They've been happy to insure the horse surely on your say so that you owned it - just trying to delay or wriggle out of payment.
I'd just ask them what form of proof they would find acceptable. Ask them if a sworn affividavit fthrough your solicitor would suffice, that might make them sit up and behave.

actually I forgot to add the passport will only be accepted as Proof of ownership if you owned the horse for more than 2 yrs which you have... the reason proof of ownership is asked for is the horse could be loaned to you. Give them a call no need for a solicitor I am sure and even with one you do still need to provide some sort of proof. I hope this helps

I am sort of insured with equesrtian direct which asmanyknow have a few problems she has been insured with themfor 8yrs and have had seveal claims. (Ed have just paid a rather large claim on other horse, took time but got there in the end).
Passports are NOT proof of ownership, not too sure they will like mine as she does not have a number or actually reg with socitey (law states u only need a passport!?)
Did think about letter from vets and farrier as have had same vets from before i owned her and farrier used to shoe her as apprentice.
What r peoples thoughts on likleyhood of them paying for death of horse? it was a shattered pastern, didn't have any x rays it was really rather obvious it was in many bits.

passport may not be proof of ownership but thats what insurance will except if owned more than 2 yrs trust me

)

Change of ownership pages must be included!

if your horse met the Beva critiera which with a broken leg should do and within t/cs and 12 months to claim I cnat see how they wont pay.

If a obvious fracture like you said it's pretty much black and white and warrants euthanasia in accordance with BEVA guidelines (this would just need to be confirmed by a vet that there was no other option etc etc).

As for ownership, as others have said - a letter from a vet/regular farrier. Membership maybe - ie BSJA/BE where you are shown as the owner. A copy of the passport will help if shows change of ownership details although, as others have said it isn't proof of ownership as such.

At the end of the day they are not trying to catch you out they just want to be sure you are making a genuine claim. I certainly would not at any point forge a receipt though!!!

Call them, clarify what they need and just send it in. With death claims such as this claims are generally pretty straightforward to be honest.

It just says on my passports that they aren't proof of ownership, but it's good to know that they DO accept them albeit if owned for more than two years!
