Pros and cons of buying a youngster

I'll echo those who don't think that getting a youngster is a great idea for you. Your confidence is currently low. You were brave enough to post some stills a few weeks ago of one of the times you came off your current horse, when he did a 'spook and spin'. You need to be able to sit that sort of manoeuvre if you have a youngster, not least because if you do get unseated it can frighten a baby badly.

A 'been there, done that' ned to to get your confidence back and to have fun on would seem to be a better option.

I bought a 9 month old Oldenburg in late 2014. He is my first young horse, although I have ridden and backed other youngsters. It has been the best experience to watch him grow and learn. I was the one to teach him right from wrong, how to behave round people and other horses. I was the first to sit on him and then walk, trot and hack. He's an absolute gem. He very brave and willing.. but it's not easy, nor straightforward (as for any young horse). It can be one step forward, 3 steps back. This can be hugely disheartening and confidence-knocking, especially for someone who is not 100% confident in the first place. 99% of youngsters will play on any weakness you have and use it for an excuse to get out of work, which can lead to ingrained bad habits. You have to be determined and consistent to produce a young, green horse.

I'm not looking for a horse, but I always see good all-rounders for sale at a reasonable price within your budget. Good luck.
