Went to look at a mare for a friend yesterday. She's rising 5 TB mare, about 15.2 or to mature to 15.2.

Now for me the two most important things about this mare - she's good to hack in traffic, and she has a lovely nature.

However, she's a bit green and though she has popped round a small XC and done a few rounds of small showjumps, she will need bringing on and some flat work.

She is a really affectionate mare and lovely in the stable, not at all stroppy and bad mannered.

Friend really likes her but thinks price (£3k) is too much for a mare that green, even though she agrees she mainly wants to hack and the mare is an angel on the road, and wants something with a good nature - which she has.

Given how many people have had a nightmare lately finding a good horse, would you think if she passes the vet that 3k with a wintec adjustable saddle, bridle not fab, but also indoor and outdoor rug and buckets etc is reasonable for a good hack that needs bringing on, or would you expect more schooling for that, or trade the good nature for something that had done more?

I'd say its not UNreasonable - she sounds like a lovely mare who could be worth more with a bit more schooling.

However unless she has great potential to affiliate in some discipline, I'd have thought 2.5k would be a more reasonable offer.

I think the same as xspiralx - £2.5 K would be a reasonable offer.

I would also suggest caution in buying a 5year old TB just to hack out. TBs get bored easily, and if she gets bored, she may start looking for trouble and lose some of that lovely nature...

Well its not just to hack out - and the riding we have here is fantastic - basically on the edge of the forestry then miles and miles of the North Yorks moors.

The idea would be to hack the mare now for a few weeks til the ground dries (?!!) at which point she will be doing some schooling. Plus we will box to the big livery yard at least once a month for a lesson.

The friend wants to get to really know any potential horse and be able to ride alone or in company, and then hopefully do some riding club events - mainly dressage.

I have to admit - I'm probably thinking the same, but I know we have looked at a similar type of mare, but older, that was that price (£3k) and had a previous but healed suspensory ligament injury. I'd rather pay the money for a younger and undamaged mare than a less green but past injury mare (if you can make sense of that...)

We have another friend that is going to try her on the flat tomorrow, as she is much better at that (she helps us showing and does dressage) to see how much work she thinks the mare needs, and she has offered to help bring her on if the 1st friend buys her, which was a nice offer and friend 1 is thankful of it!

Though have had my arm twisted that I would swap some more sensibly coloured items for the pink things...

If the owner advertises her, its for £3.5k and she has told us she won't go lower than £3k. I think friend can maybe offer less as then saves the owner the cost of (quite expensive) livery and advertising...

Trying to get a feel for whether if she does end up paying the £3k its not really overpriced, but then if she gets her for less, its better...

To be honest you can't buy a good nature & horses at that age that are sensible to hack out are not that common...I reckon it's reasonable if she passes the vet

Aha!!! Now thats exactly what we were saying! Worth their weight in gold if they are good in traffic and with good natures - its not really something to you can teach them is it? I mean you can teach manners, but if its a stroppy type, its not necessarily going to change no matter how hard you try...

Thats exactly what I am looking for - where is she! ......

From what I have been looking at it sounds about right, esp with some tack. As the other have said try at £2.5, subjetc to vetting.

u think its way over priced for a 5 year old tb, she maybe safe now but what when shes fit ect, if your friend only wants to do hacking a bit of scholling and local level shows theres a lovely bombproof 16.1 on our yard for sale as owners moving to greece. hes for sale with every thing and its all top quality stuff and the price is £1800, but if he goes to a good home i know she will take less than this.
and hes even as safe as houses out hunting too.
pm me and i will give you her number.

i meant to say i not u sorry.
i think shes got someone viewing him on saturday but i have seen the feller who wants him and hes way too heavy for him so i can't see her even letting him ride him.
he really is a lovely horse though i'd have him myself if he was a bit bigger.

Too big or I'd suggest it. She wants 15.2 max as she's only 5'4". She's looked at a lot of horses a while ago, and decided to only look at ones that really seemed special. This mare isn't actually advertised, its someone else we know giving her 1st refusal and its very local.

She's a really friendly mare, very pretty, good conformation, she was in the stable for 4 days (their turnout is very limited) and was still lovely and quiet to ride. She went in front, behind or in the middle - she rode out with the owner and I boxed my mare over - and was really well behaved, even when the other horse was throwing tantrums behind her.

We already have one TB on our yard (my sisters) who is a really laid back mare, mine is 3/4 TB and a real sweetie, then of course we have the spawn of satan youngster - but this mare seems like she'd fit right in. We have all year round turnout and she just isn't the type to get hyped up, even when fit.

I guess we'll see how she goes tomorrow.

Oh and she's ridden in a snaffle and cavesson, no martingale or anything, and brakes don't appear to be a problem, though she does seem to throw her head a little but we'd get teeth checked etc.

Will try get a pic or two.

It sounds daft but I can't get over how sweet she was and loving the attention of complete strangers, she's just the sort who loves being cuddled and petted and I know the friend really likes horses like that, though has had bad tempered ones in the past. I think she wants something to really bond with and spoil and she did hit it off with the mare, she just needs to know she's doing the right thing.

We have been to see some horrors, and with all the not the size they say and ones with old injuries that they forgot to mention, and all sorts, this is nice and unspoiled!

Seems fairly reasonable to me, wouldnt have expected her to have done much more than that in her 4 year old year unless being produced for competition

Take her take her take her!!
Agree with others 3k a bit steep since you could get a TB from a racing yard (like PF in fact) good in traffic but green for quite alot less...
On the other hand, I think it's worth paying a bit extra for the 'hassle-free' experience!

She sounds lovely. *Whispers* Do you think the owner will notice if I swop her for a 16.3 Bay 'very stroppy' mare?

I would definitley try and knock the price down a bit (going to excellent home, well loved, no advertising, no nasty viewers etc etc etc) and then grab her quick!

BTW where will she sleep.....not in MY stable I hope
