pros and cons of this horse... andi stallion opinions???

ive been offered a pre stallion, 15.2 12yo, bredin spain then ended up in france as a trekking horse, then came to england and has been used for jousting and film work. he has mild copd. and at some point has had hes nose broken.

i went and tried him last night, he is the quietest stallion, hes stabled next to mares, they think hes never been breed from.
hes seriousley unfit, he has issues with his mouth and the only bit they have found he goes in is a french link,. anything else he runs off. hes a classic jousting type... he rushes everything, in some distant pass hes been schooled. but currentley has no muscel and a nasty muscel under hes neck.

i love him., im looking for a good alround horse, currentley hes not, he needs reschooling. and muscles building up. hes been offered to me for 4k! bargin??

i need to call the guy asap, i love this horse and have always wanted a andi, but then i also want a horse to compete.. i do have my hubbys horse than i can compete whilst reschooling this one if i got him..

somebody help cause im thinking no but want to say yes.
 
The sensible thing to do would be to walk away. This horse sound pretty far from what you really want and for that price or a bit more you should easily find something more suitable. Having said that, I'd buy it if I took to it, but I would not recommend my style of horse shopping, I never come back with what I was actually looking for!

LOL i wasnt actually looking, they approached me about swapping my lippizaner for the andi, the stallion bit isnt the deal breaker, its hes way of schooling, or lack of, i did take him out of the yard, hes been hacked over the fields but not on the road, he was instantley relaxed, barring in mind in the school, he does all the jousting practice etc
 
I think you need to be realistic about what you want - if you want something to compete and have fun on, then look for something else - for your budget there are a lot of horses out there. He is an unknown qunatity, and he may never be the good allrounder you want.

Are you set up for a stallion? Do you keep your horses at home, or at livery - a lot of livery yards wont entertain a stallion, no matter how good they are. What sort of competitions do you want to do? A lot of riding clubs wont allow stallions to compete at their shows, so that is something else to take into consideration.

You may have your heart set on an Andaluscian. but there are plenty of nice youngsters out there for similar prices, untouched and unspoilt. If you don't mind taking on a project, perhaps look at one of those?
 
I think he's overpriced- COPD, 12yo that would need retraining. Why are they selling?

On the pros- you could chase bandits, give those with roadrage a good chase! You could start you're own "horse surfing" business!
As you said, you've got your hubby's horse to compete- but you have to be resigned to a long slog of reschooling.
 
im uming and ahring, hes a wonder horse, have offered 3k.... cheeky yes, the stallion bit isnt a issue, always a chance of lopping off hes bits,. i have my own yard so thats no problem, he can go out with other geldings aswell...
 
Sounds like an easy going stallion which is good, but if you do have problems, gelding him so late is unlikely to resolve them. I don;t think he sounds like a competition horse and it will take a couple of years and a bit of luck to turn him into one, but if you're in love with him then go for it! I do think he is horribly overpriced though, £2,000 take it or leave it would be more sensible, but it depends how much you want him and whether you can bear to walk away

He's nice, but you're paying loads for his breed... if this was a 12 yo TB, who had a broken nose, runs off, rushes, has mild COPD... you'd be looking to pay in the hundreds, not the thousands. I know you like PRE horses, and to be honest, who doesn't? but that is a lot of money for a horse who is not even particularily typey.

also he might hot up when you get him fit.

4k is a lot of money, and for that you could get a horse that is really what you want (minus the breed)
 
I wouldn't pay over £1500 for him. You sound like you have been caught by the Andalusian bug and it's clouding your judgement a bit... if he were a TB or something else, would you buy him? Sorry to sound so harsh but I think you really need to think this over and forget about the fact that he's an Andy.
 
Sorry, but this horse is not worth anywhere near £3000!! £300, more like!

You are paying for the breed and he is not even a good example of this breed.

If you've set your heart on a PRE, you can find a much better one for this price!
 
I havent read the replies to your post but...leave well alone! $ grand is a heck of a lot of money for a horse who is a current wreck and who is COPD with BALLS still on

. Leave well alone unless you have an endless amount of funds to ultimately have a newly gelded lawn mower. For 4 grand you could buy yourself a healthy youngster with the ability to do something useful. Sorry if it sounds harsh but the older you get the wiser you get. Do a body swerve while you are still in time. M.
PS, he may well be a quiet stallion cos hes depressed/unwell etc etc, doesnt mean to say he will be the same with some grub in him and some muscle on him.
 
ive hunted the internet today, im not in a rush to buy something, but ive not come across anything near the price....

arrrggg, i dont want to do the wrong thing, this horse would be with me forever, fit and musceled up hes going to be a good solid horse,.....

many of you are right, i am taking on board whats being said
 
There was a nicer andy for under 1k on horsemart the other day.

If you want an andy- import from, it'll be younger and cheaper!!

For a 12 year old with problems he really is far too much money. I'd value him at 2k absolute tops
 
HI, Just thought I would chip in here.
I own PRE horses, not a breeder, or anything in business with horses, just hobbiest.

The cheap one for under 1K were classed as "Andalusian" just as any living equine from the region can be, there is a huge difference between PRE & Andalusian. You could class a draught horse as "Andalusian" if he came from that region!
Also, every living creature (just about) out there has the passport and microchipped - don't be fooled into buying something that isn't what you think!
How little did the dealer pay for the grey if they can import him and sell him for so little!

I know how hard it is to get weight back on them and to build them back up, I also speak from personal experience on retraining and reworking these horses.
Watch their feet, huge area of problems, teeth - most rarely see dentist in Spain. I'd also check out with vet/physio with the nature of work he's been doing too - this could show any issues with the back etc...

He isn't very typey, to be honest, but the decision is down to you, seems some very sensible and good answers from the posters on here and very knowledgable people.

If you are on a strict budget and really want PRE, then you are probably going to be able to look at younger/green horses, but even then the breeding etc.. has an effect on price.
Part bred is also an option for you too.

Good luck in your search, take your time, and make sure your hobby stays fun, not a nightmare.
 
thankyou very much for your imput, i originally said no to the horse, but after some haggling on price, i have said yes subject to a vetting, im aware he will fail on the copd etc, but just want to make sure theres nothing else.

i know hes a stallion, but i have NO intentions of breeding from him, ive just spent 3 months getting condtion back on a horse, so i know what im in for.

and yes everybody is right, i could get a schoolmaster/alrounder for the money, but i didnt want a quiet horse, or a tb etc

the horse will be with me for life so im sure over the next year or so he will turn into a wonderful boy, he has so many pros going for him, that the few cons were worth the risk... same as bying any horse, its hes temprement and willing ness that really sold him to me, not the long mane or pre/andi prefixes....

in all honesty i treated him like anyriding horse when making my mind up, ok so hes a bit scatty, BUT, hes totally bomb proof, i can hack with my hubby, and is good to load, no vices. isnt bothered by other horses around him. the only real 3 nos i could find was the copd.. hes a stallion, and needs the building up...

id rather have thoose 3 than something that spooky. naps,. kicks etc..

ive had a few cheap andis put my way. 1.5k for a broken 4yr mare... theres cheap and then theres to cheap...
