Protecting horses hoof after losing a shoe

Can anyone advise suitable protective boots for using between losing a shoe and arrival of the farrier? My horse has very poor hoof quality and although my farrier comes out as soon as possible after my gelding has lost a shoe, often a substantial amount of hoof wall has crumbled and re-shoeing is a nightmare.
 
Get a piece of wood (MDF etc) trace the hoof shape, cut out and then gaffer (duct) tape this onto his foot.

Otherwise if he was living out, do not pick out the feet and let the compacted mud do its magic in holding the foot together.
 
Equi-Boots and similar are good. Pad with nappy or similar for good fit - et voila!

I have a hoof-eeze (poultice) hoof boot for my TB, and at one stage when she had a sole puncture she wore it for 4 weeks turned out every day.

They are about £30, but worth every penny in my opinion.

A horsehage bag (the corner of) and duct tape can be used in an emergency, but needs redone twice a day so very time consuming in comparison to popping on a boot.

Boa boots with pads if necessary.
They fit round feet really well which mine has.
He was without front shoes for over a week when he had his MRI done and is virtually non weight bearing without shoes. Kept him really comfy and even use them for turnout.
My farrier loves them because they way they do up means no pressure is put anywhere that would restrict blood flow.
The cheapest place i found them new was Equestrian clearance warehouse.
 
My mare is the same.
I tend to keep her in and put a nappy on and Gaffer tape over teh nappy usually works have found that the boots can cause the hoof wall to break off as well
