Ponio has come up in protein lumps again. He had a few when I got him in October, nothing over winter, and now I'd say (after a thorough examination!) he has 6 or 7 in various places all over his body.

Thing is, he's only on grass at the moment, as he was when I got him. In winter there was barely any grass (in fact none for a lot of winter because of the snow) so he was eating hay. He was also getting two feeds a day, so I'd have expected them to be worse then?

Has anyone had any experience of ponies getting these when only on grass?

If not, I may get a second opinion as to what they could be.

Did vet say protein lumps?

Is it artacaria (not sure how to spell lol) from an allergy of something eaten or bitten him?

If it is hives/nettlerash/urticaria then this is the first indication that your horse is allergic to something, it could indeed be grass. The lumps in this instance are numerous and usually cover a large area of skin.

You have to take into account; the texture (soft/hard), shape, appearance, coverage, are they itchy, is your horse bothered them, did they appear together or gradually etc etc before you can make a diagnosis.

Best to ask your vet really.

He was diagnosed with them in October. But he only had three!

Within the last fortnight he's gotten one on his face, two on his pastern, two on the back of his cannon bone, one on his flank... that I can remember off the top of my head. They're hard and fairly tiny. Only after spraying vet spray on them do they scab over and drop off.

They don't appear to be itchy or sore like fly bites. Just "there".

I also expected that if he reacted to something there'd be more of them.

Anyway, vet rounds are due in two weeks so I'll ask her to have another/better look. Just curious at the moment as they're not affecting him, nor are they visible unless you hunt for them!
